1 hadith (2159 — 2159)

2 لَا بَأْسَ بِالْغِنَى لِمَنِ اتَّقَى

There is no harm in wealth for one who fears Allah

3 خُذُوا مَا حَلَّ وَدَعُوا مَا حُرِّمَ

Take what is lawful and leave what is forbidden

4 لَمْ يَكُنْ عَبْدٌ لِيَمُوتَ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ آخِرَ رِزْقٍ هُوَ لَهُ

The bounty of Allah is not attained through disobedience

Lying and oaths occur in trade, so mix it with charity

The truthful, trustworthy Muslim merchant will be with the martyrs on the Day of Resurrection

8 إِنَّ مِنْ أَشْرَاطِ السَّاعَةِ أَنْ يَفِيضَ الْمَالُ ، وَيَكْثُرَ الْجَهْلُ

Among the signs of the Hour is that wealth will overflow and ignorance will increase

9 إنَّ خَيْرَ الْبِقَاعِ الْمَسَاجِدُ ، وإنَّ شَرَّ الْبِقَاعِ الْأَسْوَاقُ .

The best of places are the mosques and the worst of places are the markets

10 لَا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ

Do not differ, lest your hearts differ

It is not lawful for a Muslim who sells his brother something with a defect not to point it out to him

Whoever cheats us is not one of us

13 لَيَأْتِيَنَّ عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ لَا يَبْقَى فِيهِ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا أَكَلَ الرِّبَا

A time will come upon the people when no one will remain who does not consume usury

14 لَا يَحْتَكِرُ إِلَّا خَاطِئٌ

No one hoards except a sinner

15 الْجَالِبُ إِلَى سُوقِنَا كَالْمُجَاهِدِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

One who brings goods to our market is like one who strives in the path of Allah

16 دَعْ مَا يَرِيبُكَ إِلَى مَا لَا يَرِيبُكَ ، فَإِنَّ الْخَيْرَ طُمَأْنِينَةٌ وَإِنَّ الشَّرَّ رِيبَةٌ

Leave what gives you doubt for what does not give you doubt, for good is tranquillity and evil is doubt

17 إِذَا سَرَّتْكَ حَسَنَتُكَ وَسَاءَتْكَ سَيِّئَتُكَ فَأَنْتَ مُؤْمِنٌ

If your good deed pleases you and your bad deed grieves you, then you are a believer

18 الْبِرُّ حُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ ، وَالْإِثْمُ مَا حَاكَ فِي صَدْرِكَ

Righteousness is good character, and sin is what wavers in your chest

Entitlement to profit goes with liability for loss

20 الْبَيِّعَانِ بِالْخِيَارِ مَا لَمْ يَتَفَرَّقَا ، وَيَأْخُذُ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا مِنَ الْبَيْعِ مَا يَهْوَى

The two parties to a sale have the option as long as they have not separated

21 اشْتِرَاطُ الْبَائِعِ خِدْمَةَ الْعَبْدِ الْمَبِيعِ وَقْتًا مَعْلُومًا

The seller stipulating the service of the sold slave for a known period

22 لَا يَجُوزُ بَيْعَانِ فِي بَيْعٍ ، وَلَا بَيْعُ مَا لَا يَمْلِكُ ، وَلَا سَلَفٌ وَبَيْعٌ ، وَلَا شَرْطَانِ فِي بَيْعٍ .

Two sales in one sale are not permitted, nor selling what one does not own, nor a loan combined with a sale, nor two conditions in one sale

23 النَّهْيُ عَنْ بَيْعِ الْحَبِّ حَتَّى يَشْتَدَّ ، وَعَنْ بَيْعِ الْعِنَبِ حَتَّى يَسْوَدَّ ، وَعَنْ بَيْعِ التَّمْرِ حَتَّى يَحْمَرَّ وَيَصْفَرَّ

The prohibition of selling grain until it hardens, grapes until they turn black and dates until they ripen

24 كَفَى بِالْمَرْءِ مِنَ الْكَذِبِ أَنْ يُحَدِّثَ بِكُلِّ مَا سَمِعَ

It is enough of a lie for a man to narrate everything he hears

25 لَا عُهْدَةَ فَوْقَ أَرْبَعٍ

There is no warranty period beyond four days

26 عُهْدَةُ الرَّقِيقِ أَرْبَعُ لَيَالٍ

The warranty period for slaves is four nights

27 مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ كَانَتْ لَهُ نِيَّةٌ فِي أَدَاءِ دَيْنِهِ إِلَّا كَانَ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّهِ عَوْنٌ

No servant intends to pay off his debt except that he has help from Allah

28 إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الدَّائِنِ ، حَتَّى يَقْضِيَ دَيْنَهُ ، مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيمَا يَكْرَهُهُ اللَّهُ

Allah is with the debtor until he pays off his debt, as long as it is not in something Allah dislikes

29 مَنْ تَدَايَنَ بِدَيْنٍ وَلَيْسَ فِي نَفْسِهِ وَفَاؤُهُ ، ثُمَّ مَاتَ ، اقْتَصَّ اللَّهُ لِغَرِيمِهِ عَنْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Whoever takes on a debt without intending to repay it and then dies, Allah will exact retribution from him for his creditor on the Day of Resurrection

30 الدَّيْنُ رَايَةُ اللَّهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ ، فَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يُذِلَّ عَبْدًا وَضَعَهَا فِي عُنُقِهِ

Debt is Allah's banner on earth; when He wishes to humiliate a servant, He places it on his neck

31 لَوْ قُتِلَ رَجُلٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، ثُمَّ عَاشَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ، مَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى يُقْضَى دَيْنُهُ

If a man were killed in the path of Allah, then brought back to life while in debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was paid

32 مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ بَرِيءٌ مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ : الْكِبْرُ وَالْغُلُولُ وَالدَّيْنُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ

Whoever dies free of three things, arrogance, stealing from the spoils and debt, will enter Paradise

33 إِنَّ إِبْلِيسَ يَئِسَ أَنْ تُعْبَدَ الْأَصْنَامُ بِأَرْضِ الْعَرَبِ

Iblis has despaired of idols being worshipped in the land of the Arabs

34 مَنْ حَالَتْ شَفَاعَتُهُ دُونَ حَدٍّ مِنْ حُدُودِ اللَّهِ ، فَقَدْ ضَادَّ اللَّهَ فِي أَمْرِهِ ، وَمَنْ خَاصَمَ فِي بَاطِلٍ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ ، لَمْ يَزَلْ فِي سَخَطِ اللَّهِ حَتَّى يَنْزِعَ

Whoever's intercession prevents one of the prescribed penalties of Allah has opposed Allah in His command

35 حِكَايَةُ رَجُلٍ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ وَكَانَ يُدَايِنُ النَّاسَ بِالْمُسَامَحَةِ

The story of a man who never did any good but used to deal with people leniently in debts

36 مَنْ أَنْظَرَ مُعْسِرًا وَوَضَعَ لَهُ ، أَظَلَّهُ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ

Whoever grants respite to one in hardship or relieves him of his debt, Allah will shade him in His shade

37 وَمَنْ وَجَدْتُمُوهُ مُعْسِرًا فَتَجَاوَزُوا عَنْهُ

Whoever you find in hardship, overlook his debt

38 إِنَّ خَيْرَ الْقَوْمِ خَيْرُهُمْ قَضَاءً

The best of people are those best in repaying debts

Weigh and give extra

40 النَّهَيُ عَنْ كَسْرِ سِكَّةِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ الْجَائِزَةِ .

The prohibition of breaking the current coinage of the Muslims

41 إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَنَ الْخَمْرَ ، وَعَاصِرَهَا ، وَمُعْتَصِرَهَا ، وَشَارِبَهَا

Allah has cursed wine, the one who presses it, the one for whom it is pressed and the one who drinks it

42 مَنْ طَلَبَ حَقًّا فَلْيَطْلُبْ فِي عَفَافٍ

Whoever seeks a right should seek it with decency

43 نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ ثَمَنِ الْكَلْبِ ، وَمَهْرِ الْبَغِيِّ ، وَأَجْرِ الْكَاهِنِ ، وَكَسْبِ الْحَجَّامِ

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the price of a dog, the earnings of a prostitute, the fee of a soothsayer and the earnings of a cupper

44 نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ لَبَنِ الْجَلَّالَةِ ، وَعَنْ أَكْلِ الْمُجَثَّمَةِ ، وَعَنِ الشُّرْبِ مِنْ فِيِّ السِّقَاءِ .

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the milk of an animal that feeds on filth, the flesh of an animal tied up and shot, and drinking from the mouth of a waterskin

45 نَهَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ بَيْعِ الشَّاةِ بِاللَّحْمِ

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling a sheep in exchange for meat

46 مَنِ اشْتَرَى سَرِقَةً ، وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهَا سَرِقَةٌ ، فَقَدْ شَرَكَ فِي عَارِهَا وَإِثْمِهَا

Whoever buys stolen goods knowing that they are stolen shares in its shame and sin

47 أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ بَاعَ بَيْعًا مِنْ رَجُلٍ أَوْ رَجُلَيْنِ فَهُوَ للْأَوَّلِ مِنْهُمَا ، وَأَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ زَوَّجَهَا وَلِيَّانِ فَهِيَ لِلْأَوَّلِ مِنْهُمَا

Whenever a man sells something to two men, it belongs to the first of them, and whenever a woman is married off by two guardians, she belongs to the first of them

48 إِذَا سَرَقَ الرَّجُلُ فَوَجَدَ سَرِقَتَهُ ، فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا حَيْثُ وَجَدَهَا

When a man's property is stolen and he finds it, he has the most right to it wherever he finds it

49 بِمَ يَسْتَحِلُّ أَحَدُكُمْ مَالَ أَخِيهِ إِنْ أَصَابَتْهُ جَائِحَةٌ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ ؟

By what right would any of you take his brother's money if a calamity from the sky struck his crop?

3 hadith (2287 — 2289)

50 وَإِنَّ أَرْبَى الرِّبَا عِرْضُ الرَّجُلِ الْمُسْلِمِ

The worst form of usury is attacking the honour of a Muslim man

51 إِذَا ظَهَرَ الزِّنَا وَالرِّبَا فِي قَرْيَةٍ ، فَقَدْ أَحَلُّوا بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ عَذَابَ اللَّهِ

When adultery and usury appear in a town, they have brought the punishment of Allah upon themselves

52 الرِّبَا وَإِنْ كَثُرَ فَإِنَّ عَاقِبَتَهُ تَصِيرُ إِلَى قَلٍّ

Usury, however much it increases, ends in decrease

53 نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ بَيْعِ الصُّبْرَةِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ ، لَا يَعْلَمُ مَكِيلَهَا بِالْكَيْلِ الْمُسَمَّى مِنَ التَّمْرِ

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling a heap of dates of unknown measure for a known measure of dates

54 النَّهْيُ عَنْ بَيْعِ الرُّطَبِ بِالتَّمْرِ

The prohibition of selling fresh dates for dried dates

55 تُرْفَعُ لِلرَّجُلِ صَحِيفَةٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، حَتَّى يَرَى أَنَّهُ نَاجٍ فَمَا تَزَالُ مَظَالِمُ بَنِي آدَمَ تَتْبَعُهُ حَتَّى مَا تَبْقَى لَهُ حَسَنَةٌ

A man's record will be raised on the Day of Resurrection until he thinks he is saved, then the rights of others will keep pursuing him until no good deed remains to him

56 نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْجَلَّالَةِ أَنْ يُؤْكَلَ لَحْمُهَا وَيُشْرَبَ لَبَنُهَا .

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating the flesh of an animal that feeds on filth and drinking its milk

57 نَهَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ تُبَاعَ السِّلَعُ حَيْثُ تُبْتَاعُ ، حَتَّى يَحُوزَهَا التُّجَّارُ إِلَى رِحَالِهِمْ

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling goods where they are bought until the merchants take them to their own premises

58 نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ كُلِّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ ، وَعَنْ قَتْلِ الْوِلْدَانِ

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade every predatory animal with fangs and the killing of children

59 كَسْبُ الْحَجَّامِ خَبِيثٌ

The earnings of the cupper are impure

60 النَّهْيُ عَنْ كَسْبِ الْأَمَةِ إِلَّا مَا عَمِلَتْ بِيَدِهَا نَحْوَ الْغَزْلِ وَالْخَبْزِ وَالنَّفْشِ

The prohibition of the earnings of a slave woman except what she earns with her hands, such as spinning, baking and carding

61 النَّهْيُ عَنْ كَسْبِ الْأَمَةِ حَتَّى يُعْلَمَ مِنْ أَيْنَ هُوَ .

The prohibition of the earnings of a slave woman until it is known where they come from

62 النَّهْيُ عَنْ عَسْبِ الْفَحْلِ

The prohibition of charging a fee for the stud of a stallion

64 مَنْ أَقَالَ مُسْلِمًا أَقَالَ اللَّهُ عَثْرَتَهُ

Whoever agrees to cancel a sale for a Muslim, Allah will overlook his slips

65 إِذَا اخْتَلَفَ الْبَيِّعَانِ وَلَيْسَ بَيْنَهُمَا بَيِّنَةٌ ، فَهُوَ مَا يَقُولُ رَبُّ السِّلْعَةِ أَوْ يَتَتَارَكَا

When the buyer and seller disagree and there is no evidence between them, the word of the owner of the goods prevails or they cancel the sale

66 وَلَدُ الرَّجُلِ مِنْ كَسْبِهِ مِنْ أَطْيَبِ كَسْبِهِ ، فَكُلُوا مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ

A man's child is part of his earnings and of his best earnings, so eat from their wealth

67 أَدِّ الْأَمَانَةَ إِلَى مَنِ ائْتَمَنَكَ ، وَلَا تَخُنْ مَنْ خَانَكَ

Render the trust to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray the one who betrayed you

68 لَا يَجُوزُ لِامْرَأَةٍ أَمْرٌ فِي مَالِهَا ، إِذَا مَلَكَ زَوْجُهَا عِصْمَتَهَا

A woman may not dispose of her wealth on her own once her husband has her marriage bond

69 حِفْظُ الْحَوَائِطِ بِالنَّهَارِ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ، وَ حِفْظُ الْمَاشِيَةِ بِاللَّيْلِ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا ، وَ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمَاشِيَةِ مَا أَصَابَتْ مَاشِيَتُهُمْ

Guarding gardens by day is the duty of their owners, guarding livestock by night is the duty of their owners, and the owners of livestock are liable for what their livestock damage

70 الْآخِذُ وَالْمُعْطِي سَوَاءٌ فِي الرِّبَا

The taker and the giver are equal in usury

71 الْمُسْلِمُونَ عَلَى شُرُوطِهِمْ وَالصُّلْحُ جَائِزٌ

The Muslims are bound by their conditions, and reconciliation is permissible

72 كُلُّ مَعْرُوفٍ صَدَقَةٌ

Every good deed is charity

73 أَيُّمَا رَجُلٍ مَاتَ أَوْ أَفْلَسَ ، فَصَاحِبُ الْمَتَاعِ أَحَقُّ بِمَتَاعِهِ إِذَا وَجَدَهُ بِعَيْنِهِ

Whenever a man dies or becomes bankrupt, the owner of the goods has the most right to them if he finds them intact

74 لَا يُغْلَقُ الرَّهْنُ لَهُ غُنْمُهُ وَعَلَيْهِ غُرْمُهُ

A pledge is not forfeited; its gain belongs to its owner and its loss is borne by him

75 إِذَا كَانَتِ الْهِبَةُ لِذِي رَحِمٍ مُحَرَّمٍ لَمْ يَرْجِعْ فِيهَا

When a gift is made to a close relative within the prohibited degrees, it is not taken back

76 مَكَّةُ مُنَاخٌ لَا تُبَاعُ رِبَاعُهَا ، وَلَا تُؤَاجَرُ بُيُوتُهَا

Makkah is a place of encampment; its dwellings are not sold and its houses are not rented out

77 ذِكْرُ تَأْمِينِ النَّاسِ يَوْمَ فَتْحِ مَكَّةَ إِلَّا أَرْبَعَةُ نَفَرٍ

Mention of the granting of safety to the people on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, except for four persons

The story of the sale of Surraq and his emancipation, and the reason for his name

79 مَنْ فَرَّقَ بَيْنَ وَالِدَةٍ وَوَلَدِهَا فَرَّقَ اللَّهُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَحِبَّتِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Whoever separates a mother from her child, Allah will separate him from his loved ones on the Day of Resurrection

80 نَهَى عَنِ التَّفْرِيقِ بَيْنَ الْأُمِّ وَوَلَدِهَا

The prohibition of separating a mother from her child

81 إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ سَمْحَ الْبَيْعِ سَمْحَ الشِّرَاءِ سَمْحَ الْقَضَاءِ

Allah loves one who is easygoing in selling, easygoing in buying and easygoing in settling debts
