Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2178

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, which places are the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know." He asked: Which places are the worst? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know." Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask your Lord." Jibril (peace be upon him) said: We do not ask Him about anything (of our own accord). Then such a trembling came over Jibril (peace be upon him) that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was stunned at seeing his state. Then when Jibril (peace be upon him) ascended, Allah Almighty said: Muhammad asked you which places are the best, and you said: I do not know; and he asked which places are the worst, and you said: I do not know? He said: Yes. Then Allah said: Tell him that the best places are the mosques and the worst places are the markets.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Textual correction: The sentence "So Jibril (peace be upon him) came to him" had dropped out of the manuscripts, and it has been restored from al-'Allamah al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Grading: This hadith is
hasan li-ghayrihi. 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered from ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life, and Jarir heard from him in that very period.
