It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade taking a fee for the mating of a stud animal ('asb al-fahl).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and Ali bin al-Hakam al-Bunani of Basrah is among the trustworthy and reliable narrators.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note: In the manuscripts the word here has been distorted into "kasb" (with kaf), whereas the correct word is "'asb" (with 'ayn). "'Asb al-fahl" refers to the fee charged for putting a male animal (a horse, a camel or the like) to stud.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Isma'il bin Ibrahim is the well-known narrator Ibn 'Ulayyah. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2284), Abu Dawud (3429) and Ibn Hibban (5156) recorded it through Musaddad with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part. Reference / Source: Ahmad 8/ (4630), al-Tirmidhi (1273) and al-Nasa'i (4683, 6222) recorded it through several routes from Isma'il bin Ibrahim. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (2284) recorded it through Musaddad, from 'Abd al-Warith, from 'Ali bin al-Hakam. General principle: Ibn al-Athir says that the prohibition is not really of the stud's water or of the mating itself, but of the fee (hire) taken for it. Lending a male animal for mating is recommended. A hadith says: "Among its dues is lending its male for mating." This hadith is in Muslim (988), narrated from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah.
