Hayyan bin Ubaydullah al-Adawi (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I asked Abu Mijlaz about sarf (exchanging currency for currency), and he told me that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) for a long period of his life saw no harm in it (when the exchange was hand to hand), and he used to say that usury (riba) is only in deferred transactions. Then he met Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: O Ibn Abbas! Do you not fear Allah? How long will you go on making people consume usury? Has it not reached you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while staying one day with his wife Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: "I have a craving for 'ajwah dates"? So she sent two sa' of dates to a man of the Ansar (to exchange them) and in return received one sa' of 'ajwah dates. She presented them to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he liked the dates. He picked up a date to eat, but then held back and asked: "Where did you get this from?" Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I sent two sa' of dates to a man of the Ansar, and in exchange for the two sa' he brought us this one sa'; here it is, eat. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) pushed the dates away from in front of him and said: "Return it; I have no need of it. Dates for dates, wheat for wheat, barley for barley, gold for gold and silver for silver must be exchanged hand to hand, on the spot and in equal measure; whoever gives more has engaged in usury." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The same applies to everything that is measured by volume or by weight." On hearing this, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Abu Sa'id! May Allah reward you with Paradise, for you have reminded me of something I had forgotten. I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him. After that he used to forbid it in the strongest terms.

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about buying sult (a kind of barley) in exchange for dates. He asked whether there was a difference between them in weight or quantity. The people said: Yes. He said: This is not right. And he related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about buying fresh dates in exchange for dried dates, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there a difference of decrease in weight between them?" The people said: Yes, fresh dates decrease when they dry. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then this transaction is not permissible."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): I used to sell camels at al-Baqi'. I would make the sale in dinars but receive payment in dirhams, and sometimes sell in dirhams and receive dinars. Some unease arose in my heart about this, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the house of Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) (or was coming out of it). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Wait a moment, I wish to ask you a question. I sell camels at al-Baqi'; I sell for dinars and take dirhams, and I sell for dirhams and take dinars. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm in your taking payment at that day's market rate, as long as you complete the account before you part from one another and nothing remains (outstanding) between you."
