Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about buying sult (a kind of barley) in exchange for dates. He asked whether there was a difference between them in weight or quantity. The people said: Yes. He said: This is not right. And he related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about buying fresh dates in exchange for dried dates, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Is there a difference of decrease in weight between them?" The people said: Yes, fresh dates decrease when they dry. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then this transaction is not permissible."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi) because of Makhramah bin Bukayr. Technical note: The phrase "selling barley for dates" in it is a narrator's mistake; the correct wording is "wheat" (burr), as in al-Bayhaqi's narration. For sult (a kind of barley) and wheat can be counted as one kind, in which excess is forbidden. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 5/ 295 and in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa-l-Athar" (11133) through Imam al-Hakim with this same chain. (2295 - 2298). Note / Clarification: See the previous numbers (2295 to 2298).
