It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to conquer Makkah, he said to me: "Call out to the Ansar." So I called out: O company of the Ansar! Respond to the call of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They came so swiftly it was as if they had a prior appointment. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this road, and whoever appears before you, do not leave him until you have overpowered him." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) advanced, and Allah conquered Makkah for him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf of the House of Allah and prayed two rak'ahs, then went out through the gate that faces al-Safa and went up onto the hill of al-Safa. There he addressed the people, while the Ansar were below him in the low ground. Then the Ansar said to one another: This man (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) has been overcome by tenderness for his people and a longing for his town. So Allah Almighty sent down revelation about what the Ansar had said, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O company of the Ansar! Are you saying that this man has been overcome by tenderness for his people and a longing for his town?" Then he said: "If that were so, who would I be then? Never, by Allah! I am the servant of Allah and His true Messenger. My life is with you, and my death is also with you." The Ansar said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, we said that only out of fear that you would leave us and remain here. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are truthful before Allah and His Messenger." The narrator said: By Allah, there was not one of them whose chest was not soaked with tears.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Thabit here is the well-known Successor Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani. Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (1871, 3024) and Imam al-Nasa'i (11234) recorded it through two routes from Sallam bin Miskin; Abu Dawud's narrations are abridged. Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1780), Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban (4760) recorded it through Sulayman bin al-Mughirah and Hammad bin Salamah, from Thabit al-Bunani. Note / Clarification: Imam Abu Dawud's narration here too is given in abridged form. Note / Clarification: "La yushrifanna" means: "let him by no means look out" or "let him not appear". Note / Clarification: "Anamtumuhu" means: "you killed him" or "you put him to the sleep of death". Note / Clarification: "Yu'adduna" (with shaddah on the dal) means: "to vie with us or boast". The sense is that they might start boasting over us through you and gain superiority over us through kinship, as a result of which you would stay with them.
