Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2244

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer. When he finished, he asked: "Is there anyone here from Banu so-and-so?" The people remained silent (and whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them about something, they would fall silent out of respect). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: "Is there anyone here from Banu so-and-so?" A man said: "Yes, this is so-and-so." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your companion has been held back at the gate of Paradise because of a debt he owed." Upon this, a man said: "His debt is my responsibility," and he paid it off.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Sha'bi stated explicitly that he heard this hadith from Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (932); although it will come at number (2246) that al-Sha'bi narrated it through Sim'an bin Mushannaj, it is not unlikely that al-Sha'bi heard directly from Samurah, because at the time of Samurah's death al-Sha'bi was about 38 years old; so it is possible that he heard it in both ways.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 20124) narrated it through the chain of Shu'bah from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Isma'il bin Abi Khalid is corroborated by Firas bin Yahya (in the next narration) and by al-Ala' bin Abd al-Karim with al-Tabarani (al-Awsat 3049), whose chain is strong (qawi).
