Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2243

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting at the place where the funeral biers are placed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards the sky, then lowered his gaze, placed his hand on his forehead and said: "Subhan Allah! Subhan Allah! What severity Allah has sent down!" Seeing this, we became frightened and remained silent. When the next day came, I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, what was the severity that was sent down?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Concerning debt. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If a man were martyred in the path of Allah, then brought back to life, then martyred, then brought back to life, while he owed a debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was paid off."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Abu Kathir (the freed slave of Muhammad bin Jahsh), because a group of narrators narrated from him and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We earlier called this wording weak in "al-Musnad" (37/ 22493) because it was narrated with other wording, but then it became clear to us that there is no contradiction between the two wordings, since the second narration may be an abridged form of the first
Important point: Imam al-Daraqutni in "al-Ilal" (3384) brought together the chains of both wordings, as if he considered it one hadith, and this is correct; so one wording will not be a defect ('illah) for the other
Note / Clarification: Abd Allah bin Raja' is al-Ghudani, and al-Qa'nabi is Abd Allah bin Maslamah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (37/ 22493) and al-Nasa'i (6237) narrated it through two routes from al-Ala' bin Abd al-Rahman, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (28/ 17253) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Amr that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: If I am martyred in the path of Allah, what will I get? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise"; when he turned away, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except for debt; Jibril (peace be upon him) has just now told me this in confidence"
Grading: Its chain is also "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This abridged wording is supported by the hadith of Abu Qatadah (Sahih Muslim 1885) and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (Sunan al-Nasa'i 4348), whose chain is sahih; so it is "sahih li-ghayrih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part alone is supported by the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr bin al-As (Sahih Muslim 1886), whose wording is: "Every sin of the martyr is forgiven except debt".
Note / Clarification: "Where the funerals were placed" refers to the Prophet's Mosque, as mentioned in the hadith of the stoning of the two Jews in Sahih al-Bukhari (7332).
Main discussion: Ibn Abd al-Barr says in "al-Tamhid" (23/ 238): The debt for which its owner will be held back from Paradise is one for which he left the means of repayment but made no bequest, or he was able to repay but did not, or he took the loan for something unlawful or for extravagance and died; but whoever took a loan for a lawful right out of need and hardship and left nothing for repayment, Allah will not hold him back from Paradise, because it is obligatory on the ruler (sultan) to repay his debt from the charities or from the share of the debtors
Note / Clarification: It has also been said that this strictness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding debt was at a time before the conquests and the abundance of fay' wealth
Guidance: On this topic it is essential to study "Sharh al-Zurqani ala al-Muwatta'" (3/ 55-56).
