Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2396

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man gave the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a milch she-camel as a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him six young she-camels in return for it, but the man remained displeased (with them). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will accept my excuse regarding so-and-so? He gave me a she-camel as a gift, and it is as if I see it (as a boast) in the faces of his family. Then I gave him six young she-camels in return for it, yet he remained displeased. I had firmly resolved that from now on I would not accept a gift from anyone except a Qurashi, an Ansari, a Thaqafi or a Dawsi."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is a "sahih hadith", and the chain is "strong" (qawi) because of Muhammad bin Ajlan; it also has corroborations.
Reference / Source: Ahmad and al-Nasa'i narrated it in brief via Ibn Ajlan.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Ma'shar al-Sindi and Ayyub bin Abi Miskin also narrated it from Sa'id al-Maqburi, and Mis'ar bin Kidam corroborated them.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrated it via Muhammad bin Ishaq, and Ibn Ishaq stated explicitly that he heard it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id al-Maqburi heard directly from Abu Hurayrah and also through his father, so both kinds of chain (direct and indirect) are sahih.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in brief via Abu Salamah from Abu Hurayrah.
Linguistic explanation: "Bakarat" is the plural of bakrah, which refers to a young she-camel.
Linguistic explanation: "Liqhah" refers to a she-camel that has recently given birth (a milch camel).
Linguistic explanation: "Man ya'dhiruni min fulan" means: who will make my excuse for me (i.e., stand with me) if I repay this person for his ill-treatment, so that no one blames me?
