Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2277

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating a cat and consuming its price.
The narration of al-A'mash from Abu Sufyan is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: With the mention of the prohibition of the price of the cat, it is "sahih"; but the mention of "eating" it was made only by Umar bin Zayd al-San'ani, who is weak, although there are other corroborations (mutaba'at) for the prohibition of its price.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3480) narrated it through the chain of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, from Abd al-Razzaq, in which only the price of the cat is mentioned.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Ibn Majah, Muslim (1569) and al-Nasa'i narrated it by way of Abu al-Zubayr; all of them mentioned the prohibition of the price of the cat but not of eating it, and they also mentioned the price of the dog. Abu al-Zubayr asked Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (strongly discouraged) that".
Juristic point: As for the meat of the cat, its prohibition is established by the hadiths that forbid eating every predator with fangs (dhi nab), and the cat is also a predator.
