Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about selling white wheat in exchange for sult (a kind of barley). He asked: Is there a difference in weight between them? The people said: Yes. So he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about selling fresh dates in exchange for dried dates; he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked those around him: "Do fresh dates decrease in weight after they dry?" The people said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then do not make such a deal."
Imam Malik disliked it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Zayd Abu Ayyash (al-Zuraqi) was declared trustworthy by al-Daraqutni and Ibn Hibban, and this hadith of his was declared sahih by Imam al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban and the author (al-Hakim) himself here Important point: According to al-Mundhiri, Imam Malik relied on him despite his own severe criticism of narrators, and al-Ayni says that he is thiqah according to the experts of hadith. Note / Clarification: Abd Allah bin Yazid refers to the freed slave (mawla) of al-Aswad bin Sufyan. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (3/ 1515), Abu Dawud (3359), Ibn Majah (2264), al-Tirmidhi (1225), al-Nasa'i (5991) and Ibn Hibban narrated it through various routes from Imam Malik with this same chain. (2314). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration will come next by way of Isma'il bin Umayyah, from Abd Allah bin Yazid, and Imran bin Abi Anas also corroborated Abd Allah bin Yazid, as will come at number (2314). (2298). Variation in the chain: Yahya bin Abi Kathir narrated it from Abd Allah bin Yazid with different wording, which is coming at number (2298). Note / Clarification: "Al-sult" (a kind of barley): it is a grain between wheat and barley whose husk is not like the husk of barley; to the touch it is like wheat, and in its nature and coolness it is like barley. Note / Clarification: "Al-bayda'" refers to wheat (hintah). Important point: Ibn Qutaybah says that Sa'd disliked selling sult for wheat because, in his view, they are one and the same kind (genus), whereas other scholars differed with him. Note / Clarification: The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying "Does it decrease when it dries?": according to Imam al-Khattabi, it is in the form of a question, but its purpose is to make the reality clear and to draw attention to the underlying reason ('illah) of the ruling, so that analogy can be drawn from it to other similar things.
