Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2398

It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Khalid bint Khalid (may Allah be pleased with her) that some garments were brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), among which was a small black khamisah (an embroidered wrap). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whom do you think I should clothe with this wrap?" The people remained silent. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring Umm Khalid to me." She said: I was brought, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) dressed me in it with his own blessed hands and said: 'Abli wa akhlifi' "Wear it out, and then may Allah grant you a replacement for it (that is, may you live long)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this twice. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) began looking at the yellow and red design on the khamisah and saying: "O Umm Khalid, this is sana." And sana in the Abyssinian language means beautiful.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Manuscript (Z) has "وأخلفي" (with fa'), which according to al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar is better, because it means "may Allah give her a good replacement for it", whereas with "qaf" it means "to wear out".

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", and all its narrators are thiqah and well known.
Grading: This narration is in Sahih al-Bukhari (5845) with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated it via Hashim bin al-Qasim.
Reference / Source: Since it is already in al-Bukhari (3071), al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak is a slip on his part.
Note / Clarification: It will come via Sufyan bin Uyaynah at number (4294).
Note / Clarification: See number (7579) for the route of al-Hasan bin Bishr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration that will come at number (5168) has an "inqita'" (the chain is broken), because Sa'id bin Amr did not meet his uncle Khalid bin Sa'id.
Linguistic explanation: "Khamisah" is a silk or woollen striped wrap; usually it was black and patterned.
Linguistic explanation: "'Alam" means the patterns or border (tiraz) made on a garment.
