It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever grants respite to someone in hardship will have, for each day before the debt falls due, the reward of charity; and when the debt falls due and he grants him respite after that, he will have, for each day, the reward of giving the like of it (that amount) in charity."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih" Note / Clarification: Affan is Ibn Muslim al-Saffar. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/ 23046) narrated it through the chain of Affan with these words: "Whoever grants respite to someone in hardship, for every day an equal amount will be recorded for him as charity; and if he grants respite after the term is complete, for every day double will be recorded as charity". Important point: The wording of Imam al-Hakim is the reliable one, because all the other students of Affan and Abd al-Warith narrated it this way. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (2418) also narrated it, but its chain contains Abu Dawud al-A'ma, who is "matruk al-hadith" (unacceptable). Note / Clarification: The meaning of the hadith is that if respite is given before the term of the loan is complete, one receives a general charity for each day; but if respite is given after the term is complete, one receives each day a charity equal to the amount that was lent Important point: According to a narration of Musnad Ahmad, respite before the term is equal to half the charity.
