Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2290

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Usury (riba) has seventy-three doors; the lightest of them is like a man marrying (committing indecency with) his own mother, and the greatest usury is to go after the honour of a Muslim man."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy, but the correct view is that it is "mawquf" (the statement of a Companion), as we have clarified in the commentary on Ibn Majah (2275)
Note / Clarification: Zubayd is al-Yami, Ibrahim is al-Nakha'i, Masruq is Ibn al-Ajda', and Abd Allah refers to Ibn Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah narrated it through the chain of Amr bin Ali al-Fallas with only these words: "Usury has seventy-three (73) doors"
Important point: Ibn al-Jawzi objected to its authenticity on the grounds that the gravity of sins is known from their effects: fornication ruins lineages, whereas one morsel of usury does not cause social corruption of that degree; hence the authenticity of this comparison is questionable.
Grading: The last part of this hadith (attacking a Muslim's honour) is established as "sahih" from Sa'id bin Zayd as marfu': "The worst usury is to speak unjustly against the honour of a Muslim" (Abu Dawud 4876).
