It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "So-and-so has a date cluster (a fruit-bearing branch) in my garden which troubles me, and its place causes me hardship." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him (the owner) and said: "Sell me this cluster of yours that is in so-and-so's garden." He said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give it to me as a gift (hibah)." He said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then sell it to me in exchange for a cluster in Paradise." He (still) refused. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have not seen anyone more miserly than you, except the one who is miserly with the greeting of salam (that is, does not give it)."

Grading: It is "hasan" on the strength of its supporting reports (shawahid), except for the sentence "I have not seen anyone more miserly…" Note / Clarification: The hadith of Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil is "hasan" for consideration (i'tibar), and the earlier hadith of Anas supports it. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22/ 14517) narrated it through the route of Zuhayr bin Muhammad Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (38/ 23085) also narrated it through the route of Abu Salih from some of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and all its narrators are thiqah. (2234). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Other narrations state that "the most miserly person is the one who is miserly with the greeting of salam" Reference / Source: This is a mawquf saying of Abu Hurayrah (al-Adab al-Mufrad 1042), and its chain is sahih Grading: According to Imam al-Daraqutni, the correct view is that it is mawquf. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it from Abd Allah bin Mughaffal as marfu' Grading: According to Imam al-Mundhiri its chain is "jayyid" (good).
