لَوْ قُتِلَ رَجُلٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، ثُمَّ عَاشَ وَعَلَيْهِ دَيْنٌ ، مَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ حَتَّى يُقْضَى دَيْنُهُ
If a man were killed in the path of Allah, then brought back to life while in debt, he would not enter Paradise until his debt was paid

أخبرَناه أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا إبراهيم بن محمد بن الهيثم، حدثنا عبد الله بن عمر بن أبان، حدثنا أبو الأحوص، عن سعيد بن مَسروق، عن الشعبي، عن سِمعان بن مُشنَّج. وأخبرني أبو بكر بن عبد الله الوَرَّاق، حدثنا الحسن بن سفيان، حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شَيْبة، حدثنا وكيع، عن أبيه، عن سعيد بن مسروق، عن الشعبي، عن سِمْعان بن مُشنَّج، عن سمرة بن جندب، عن النبي ﷺ، نحوه (2). مُتعذِّرٌ أن تُعلَّلَ روايةُ إسماعيلَ بن أبي خالد وفراسِ بن يحيى من رواية الأئمة الأثبات عنهما، بمثلِ هذه الروايات، والله أعلم.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said something similar.
(Imam al-Hakim says that it is not possible to declare the narrations of such reliable Imams as Isma'il bin Abi Khalid and Firas bin Yahya in the chain of this hadith defective on the basis of narrations like that of Sa'id bin Masruq.)

(2) إسناده حسن من أجل سمعان بن مُشنَّج، فقد وثقه العجلي وابن ماكولا، وذكره ابن خلفون وابن حبان في "الثقات"، وقد صحَّ عن الشعبي عن سمرة مباشرة، دون ذكر سمعان فيه، كما تقدم في الطريقين اللتين قبله، بل جزم النسائي بإثر (6238) أنه لا يَعلَم أحدًا قال في هذا الحديث: عن سمعان، غير سعيد بن مسروق.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Sim'an bin Mushannaj, whom al-Ijli and Ibn Makula declared thiqah
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration is also established from Imam al-Sha'bi without Sim'an; Imam al-Nasa'i stated firmly after (6238) that no one other than Sa'id bin Masruq mentioned Sim'an in it.
وأخرجه أبو داود (3341) عن سعيد بن منصور، عن أبي الأحوص، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3341) narrated it through the route of Sa'id bin Mansur, with the chain of Abu al-Ahwas.
وأخرجه أحمد 33/ (20231)، والنسائي (6238) من طريق عبد الرزاق، وأحمد (20233) عن أبي سفيان المعمري، كلاهما عن سفيان الثَّوري، عن أبيه - وهو سعيد بن مسروق -، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 20231) and al-Nasa'i (6238) narrated it through the route of Abd al-Razzaq, and Imam Ahmad through the route of Abu Sufyan al-Ma'mari; both of them narrate it through the chain of Sufyan al-Thawri from Sa'id bin Masruq.
ورواه وكيع بن الجراح مرةً عن سفيان الثَّوري، فلم يذكر في إسناده سمعان، أخرجه من طريقه ¤ ¤ الطبراني في "الكبير" (6756).
Variation in the chain: Waki' bin al-Jarrah, narrating it once from Sufyan al-Thawri, did not mention Sim'an, as in al-Tabarani (al-Kabir 6756).
