Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2377

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man died. We washed him, shrouded him, applied perfume to him and placed him for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the funeral place near the Station of Jibril. Then we informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of the funeral prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came with us a few steps, then said: "Perhaps your companion owes a debt?" The people said: Yes, two dinars. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stepped back. Then a man among us who was called Abu Qatadah said: O Messenger of Allah, those two dinars are my responsibility. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are they your responsibility, to be paid from your wealth, and the deceased is free of them?" He said: Yes. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer over him. After that, whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met Abu Qatadah, he would ask: "What happened to the two dinars?" until, at last, he said: O Messenger of Allah, I have paid them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now you have cooled his skin."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Apart from the last part of the hadith, "Now you have cooled his skin" (i.e., by paying the deceased's debt you have saved him from punishment), the rest of the hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This last sentence is narrated by Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Aqil alone, and he is weak; however, al-Mundhiri, al-Nawawi and Ibn Muflih called this chain "hasan" overall.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban narrated it via al-Zuhri from Abu Salamah, with this addition: "Whoever dies leaving a debt, it is my responsibility, and whoever leaves wealth, it belongs to his heirs."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration is also reported from Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari, Muslim and other books of the Six. Apparently the narrations of both Jabir and Abu Hurayrah are preserved in their own right, because Jabir's narration concerns a particular incident (Abu Qatadah) while Abu Hurayrah's narration is general.
