Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2342

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every good deed is charity. Whatever a man spends on himself and his family is recorded for him as charity, and whatever a person uses to protect his honour is also recorded for him as charity. Whatever a believer spends, Allah Almighty will give its replacement and is its guarantor, except what is spent on constructing a building or in sin." The narrator says: I asked Muhammad bin al-Munkadir: "How does a man protect his honour?" He replied: "What he gives to a poet or to a foul-tongued person (to silence his tongue, so that his honour remains safe)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of 'Abd al-Hamid bin al-Hasan al-Hilali.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): After citing this hadith in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (11/ 419), Imam al-Dhahabi called it "very gharib" (highly unusual).
Important point: Our comment is that al-Dhahabi meant this with respect to this particular wording (sequence); otherwise some parts of this hadith are established separately through other sahih chains, the details of which will follow.

Note / Clarification: Some of these narrators reported this hadith in abridged form.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya (8), Abu Ya'la (2040), al-Tabari (788), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi (1253), Ibn Hibban (3/ 32), al-Tabarani (6896), Ibn 'Adi (6/ 431), Tammam al-Razi (1724), al-Quda'i (95) and al-Bayhaqi recorded it through al-Miswar bin al-Salt, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir.
Grading: Al-Miswar bin al-Salt is a "very weak" (da'if jiddan) narrator.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In some sources al-Miswar's name has been distorted into "Sa'd", and some narrated it in abridged form.
Important point: This part of the hadith, "Every good deed is charity", was recorded by Imam al-Bukhari (6021) and Ibn Hibban (3379) through Abu Ghassan Muhammad bin Mutarrif, and by Imam Ahmad (14709) and al-Tirmidhi (1970) through al-Munkadir bin Muhammad bin al-Munkadir.
Details of the narration: Al-Munkadir's narration has the addition: "And among good deeds is that you meet your brother with a cheerful face and pour from your bucket into your brother's vessel."
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The statement that "what a man spends on himself and his family is written for him as charity" is authentically established through another chain from Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: This narration is in Sahih Muslim (997) with these words: "Begin with yourself and give charity to it; then if anything is left, to your family; then if anything is left, to your relatives; then likewise onward (to others)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: One supporting report is the hadith of Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Musnad Ahmad (28/ 17082), Sahih al-Bukhari (55) and Sahih Muslim (1002).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A second supporting report is the hadith of al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah (2138).
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A third supporting report is the narration of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Sahih al-Bukhari (56) and Sahih Muslim (1628).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The sentence "whatever a man protects his honour with is written for him as charity" is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Hamzah bin Yusuf al-Sahmi's "Tarikh Jurjan" (356) and al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" (10/ 155).
Details of the narration: The words are: "Defend your honour with your wealth." The Companions asked: How do we protect our honour with our wealth? He said: "By giving to the poet (to silence him) and to the one whose tongue you fear."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report is the mursal narrations of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Bakr bin Hazm and Musa bin 'Uqbah, mentioned in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 179-183) in connection with the distribution of the spoils of Hunayn.
Note / Clarification: When 'Abbas bin Mirdas al-Sulami complained against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in verse, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Cut off his tongue from me." So the Companions gave him more wealth until he was pleased, and this was what cutting off his tongue (silencing him) meant.
General principle: The meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) statement "Whatever a believer spends, its replacement is upon Allah" lies in Allah the Exalted's words: "And whatever you spend (in the way of Allah), He will replace it" (Surat Saba').
Reference / Source: The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying (hadith qudsi): "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: O son of Adam, spend and I shall spend on you." Al-Bukhari (4684) and Muslim (993) recorded it from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and the wording is Muslim's.
Reference / Source: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There is no day on which the servants wake up but two angels descend; one of them says: O Allah, give the one who spends a replacement; and the other says: O Allah, give the one who withholds destruction." Al-Bukhari (1442) and Muslim (1010) recorded it from Abu Hurayrah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) statement "except what is in buildings" is supported by the hadith of Khabbab bin al-Aratt (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Ibn Majah (4163), al-Tirmidhi (2483) and Ibn Hibban (3243).
Details of the narration: The words are: "A servant is rewarded for all his spending except on earth (that is, on work with earth)", or he said "on building".
Grading: This is Ibn Majah's wording, and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although some have treated it as mawquf on Khabbab bin al-Aratt, such a statement certainly cannot be said from personal opinion (so it has the ruling of marfu').
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report is the narration of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), in Abu Dawud (5237) and Ibn Majah (4161).
Grading: The wording is Abu Dawud's: "Every building is a burden on its owner, except what is indispensable." Its chain is "hasan", and a similar narration is in Imam Ahmad (21/ 13301).
