Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2308

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I taught some of the People of the Suffah writing and the Qur'an, and one of them gave me a bow as a gift. I said (to myself): This is not really wealth, and I will use it for jihad in the path of Allah. But I thought that I would certainly go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and ask him. So I went and said: O Messenger of Allah! A man whom I used to teach writing and the Qur'an has given me a bow as a gift; it is not money, and I will use it for jihad in the path of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you would like a collar of fire to be put around your neck, then accept it."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Technical note: In the handwritten manuscripts this name was distorted into "Isa", whereas the correct name is recorded in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (6811). See his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 15/ 530.

Grading: This hadith is hasan. Although this chain is weak because of the unknown status (jahalah) of al-Aswad bin Tha'labah, the narration of Bishr bin Abd Allah that will come later with al-Hakim (5625) is hasan and supports it.
Technical note: Junadah is a mukhadram Successor (tabi'i); Ibn Ma'in called him a Companion, but the correct view is that he is a Successor.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (3416) narrated it by way of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah with this same chain.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A sahih supporting report (shahid) for this marfu' hadith is the hadith of Abu al-Darda', which al-Bayhaqi narrated in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 126, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever takes a bow for teaching the Qur'an, Allah will put on him a bow of fire". Other supporting reports are mentioned in our critical edition (tahqiq) of "Fath al-Bari" 7/ 330.
General principle: Sahih hadiths contrary to the apparent meaning of this hadith are also established, such as the narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (al-Bukhari 5007, Muslim 2201) in which he took goats for performing ruqyah and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allot a share for me too"; and the narration of Ibn Abbas (al-Bukhari 5737): "The thing most deserving of your taking a wage for it is the Book of Allah".
Note / Clarification: Al-Khattabi said in "Ma'alim al-Sunan" 3/ 100: According to some scholars, taking a wage for the Qur'an has different situations: if another teacher is available, taking a wage is permissible, but if there is no one else, the wage is not lawful. The difference among the hadiths is to be interpreted on this basis.
