It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the Battle of Hunayn the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked to borrow some coats of mail and weapons from Sayyiduna Safwan bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him). He asked: O Messenger of Allah! Is this a loan that will be returned? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is indeed a loan that will be returned."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan), because the narrator Ishaq bin 'Abd al-Wahid is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned) and "wahin" (feeble). Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (6/ 88) recorded it through the chain of Imam al-Hakim. Reference / Source: Al-Daraqutni (2951) recorded it through Salih bin al-'Ala' al-'Abdi. Fatwa of a Companion: It is authentically established that Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to hold the borrower liable for a loaned item. Reference / Source: In 'Abd al-Razzaq (14791) and Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/ 141) it is narrated that Ibn Abi Mulaykah asked Ibn 'Abbas: "Shall I claim compensation for a loaned item?" He said: "Yes, if its owners wish." Reference / Source: According to 'Abd al-Razzaq (14792), Ibn 'Abbas said: "A loaned item is subject to compensation."
