(2277). Grading: The hadith is "sahih" Note / Clarification: Abu Sufyan's name is Talhah bin Nafi'; he is saduq and there is no harm in him. Abu al-Zubayr Muhammad bin Muslim corroborated him, as will come later at number (2277). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Abd al-Barr declared this route of Abu Sufyan weak, but this view of theirs cannot be accepted Important point: Al-Tirmidhi's argument is that there was a disagreement over al-A'mash regarding the mention of Abu Sufyan; but the fact is that trustworthy narrators such as Hafs bin Ghiyath, Isa bin Yunus and Waki' narrated it from al-A'mash with the mention of Abu Sufyan, so there is no room for doubt Grading: Al-Uqayli declared it a "salih" (sound) chain. Grading: Ibn al-Jarud and al-Bayhaqi also declared it sahih Note / Clarification: "Al-sinnawr" means a cat. Main discussion: Imam al-Khattabi says in "Ma'alim al-Sunan" (3/ 130) that there may be two reasons for the prohibition regarding the cat: first, that it is like a wild animal that cannot be kept under control, and its handing over (delivery) cannot be completed, because it keeps coming and going between houses and is not like tethered animals. Juristic point: The second reason may be that its buying and selling was prohibited so that people would not refuse to lend it to one another (for use), and so that it would keep benefiting the houses against mice and the like, and so that there would be no disputes over its ownership. Note / Clarification: It has also been said that the prohibition concerns only the wild cat, not the domestic cat.
