Condemnation of learning religious knowledge for worldly purposes

Do not learn knowledge to boast before the scholars

Many a bearer of knowledge has no understanding, and many a bearer of knowledge conveys it to one with more understanding than him

Whoever takes a path seeking knowledge, Allah makes easy for him a path to Paradise

8 اعْرِفُوا أَنْسَابَكُمْ تَصِلُوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ

Know your lineages so that you may maintain your ties of kinship

9 الأَصْلُ فِي قَوْلِ الْعَالِمِ: لَا أَدْرِي

The basis for a scholar saying: I do not know

10 خَيْرُ الْبِقَاعِ الْمَسَاجِدُ وَشَرُّ الْبِقَاعِ الْأَسْوَاقُ

The best places are the mosques and the worst places are the markets

Soon people will travel far on camels and will not find a scholar more learned than the scholar of Madinah

12 مَنْهُومَانِ لَا يَشْبَعَانِ

Two people with insatiable appetites are never satisfied

13 فَضْلُ الْعِلْمِ أَحَبُّ مِنْ فَضْلِ الْعِبَادَةِ وَخَيْرُ الدِّينِ الْوَرَعُ

The merit of knowledge is more beloved than the merit of worship, and the best of religion is scrupulousness

Seek knowledge from four people

Knowledge and faith remain in their place; whoever seeks them will find them

21 هَذَا أَوَانُ يُخْتَلَسُ الْعِلْمُ مِنَ النَّاسِ ، أَوَّلُ عِلْمٍ يُرْفَعُ مِنَ النَّاسِ الْخُشُوعُ

This is the time when knowledge will be snatched from people, and the first knowledge to be taken from people is humility

22 مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَخْرُجُ فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا بَسَطَتْ لَهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا رِضًى بِمَا يَفْعَلُ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ

No man goes out seeking knowledge but the angels spread their wings for him, pleased with what he does, until he returns

23 مَنْ سُئِلَ عَنْ عِلْمٍ فَكَتَمَهُ جِيءَ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَقَدْ أُلْجِمَ بِلِجَامٍ مِنْ نَارٍ

Whoever is asked about knowledge and conceals it will be brought on the Day of Resurrection bridled with a bridle of fire

24 أَمْرُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِتَجْرِيدِ الْقُرْآنِ ، وَتَقْلِيلِ الرِّوَايَةِ

The order of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to keep the Quran separate and to narrate less

The concession for singing at weddings and weeping over the dead

28 أَفْضَلُ الْكَلَامِ كَلَامُ اللَّهِ ، وَأَحْسَنُ الْهَدْيِ هَدْيُ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

The best speech is the speech of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)

29 التَّعَوُّذُ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ

Seeking refuge from knowledge that does not benefit

The first people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection are three

35 إِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَمَا حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ

What the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden is like what Allah has forbidden

36 حَبْسُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَغَيْرَهُ عَلَى كَثْرَةِ الرِّوَايَةِ

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) detaining Ibn Masud and others for narrating too much

37 التَّوَقِّي عَنْ كَثْرَةِ رِوَايَةِ الْحَدِيثِ

Being cautious about narrating hadith excessively

It is enough of a sin for a person to narrate everything he hears

Allah will never unite this Ummah upon misguidance

43 مَنْ فَارَقَ الْجَمَاعَةَ قِيدَ شِبْرٍ فَقَدْ خَلَعَ رِبْقَةَ الْإِسْلَامِ مِنْ عُنُقِهِ

Whoever separates from the community by a handspan has removed the noose of Islam from his neck

44 مَنْ فَارَقَ الْجَمَاعَةَ شِبْرًا دَخَلَ النَّارَ

Whoever separates from the community by a handspan will enter the Fire

45 مَنْ فَارَقَ الْجَمَاعَةَ وَاسْتَذَلَّ الْإِمَارَةَ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ وَلَا حُجَّةَ لَهُ

Whoever separates from the community and degrades the authority will meet Allah with no argument in his favour

46 الصَّلَاةُ الْمَكْتُوبَةُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ وَالْجُمُعَةُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ وَالشَّهْرُ إِلَى الشَّهْرِ كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُمَا

The obligatory prayer to the next obligatory prayer, Friday to Friday and month to month are expiation for what is between them

You are witnesses over one another

49 إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى لَمْ يَضَعْ دَاءً إِلَّا وَضَعَ لَهُ دَوَاءً

Allah the Exalted has not sent down a disease without sending down a cure for it

50 الرَّحْمَةُ تَنْزِلُ عَلَى جَمَاعَةٍ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ

Mercy descends upon a gathering that remembers Allah

The world is like a pool whose clear water has been drunk and only its sediment remains

52 لَيْسَ مِنَّا مَنْ لَمْ يُجِلَّ كَبِيرَنَا وَيَرْحَمْ صَغِيرَنَا وَيَعْرِفْ لِعَالِمِنَا

He is not one of us who does not honour our elders, show mercy to our young and recognise the right of our scholar

53 قَوْلُ حَفْصَةَ لِعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا وَجَوَابُهَا فِي شِدَّةِ عَيْشِهِ

What Hafsah said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and his reply about the hardship of his life

54 كَرَمُ الْمُؤْمِنِ دِينُهُ وَمُرُوءَتُهُ عَقْلُهُ وَحَسَبُهُ خُلُقُهُ

The nobility of the believer is his religion, his dignity is his intellect and his standing is his character

55 لِيَسَعْهُمْ مِنْكُمْ بَسْطُ الْوَجْهِ وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ

Let a cheerful face and good character from you suffice them

56 الْمَعْرُوفُ إِلَى النَّاسِ يَقِي صَاحِبَهَا مَصَارِعَ السُّوءِ وَالْآفَاتِ وَالْهَلَكَاتِ

Doing good to people protects one from evil ends, calamities and destruction

57 خُذُوا الْعَفْوَ مِنْ أَخْلَاقِ النَّاسِ

Accept from people's character what comes easily

Take what is given freely and enjoin what is good

Three qualities: whoever has them, Allah will shelter him in His care

Whoever is easygoing, gentle and approachable, Allah forbids him to the Fire

62 مَنْ أَفْتَى النَّاسَ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ كَانَ إِثْمُهُ عَلَى مَنْ أَفْتَاهُ

Whoever gives people a fatwa without knowledge, the sin is upon the one who gave it

63 النَّاسُ كَانُوا لَا يَكْذِبُونَ فِي عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

People did not lie in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

64 إِنَّ الْكَذِبَ لَا يَصْلُحُ مِنْهُ جِدٌّ وَلَا هَزْلٌ ، وَلَا أَنْ يَعِدَ الرَّجُلُ ابْنَهُ ثُمَّ لَا يُنْجِزُ لَهُ

Lying is not right in seriousness or in jest, nor for a man to promise his son something and not fulfil it

65 تَفْتَرِقُ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةُ عَلَى ثَلَاثٍ وَسَبْعِينَ كُلُّهَا فِي النَّارِ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةً

This Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all in the Fire except one

66 مَنْعُ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَاصًّا كَانَ يَقُصُّ بِمَكَّةَ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنٍ ، وَذِكْرُ أَقْوَامٍ تَتَجَارَى بِهِمْ تِلْكَ الْأَهْوَاءُ كَمَا يَتَجَارَى الْكَلْبُ بِصَاحِبِهِ .

Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) forbidding a storyteller from preaching in Makkah without permission, and mention of people in whom desires run as rabies runs in its victim

67 لَتَسْلُكُنَّ سَنَنَ مَنْ قَبْلَكُمْ حَذْوَ النَّعْلِ بِالنَّعْلِ

You will follow the ways of those before you step by step
