Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 316

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are two greedy ones who are never filled: one greedy for knowledge who is never satisfied, and the other greedy for the world who is never satisfied."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and I have not found any hidden defect ('illah) in it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Awanah mentioned in the chain refers to Waddah bin Abd Allah al-Yashkuri.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi transmitted it in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra" (451) from Imam Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, who narrated it from Ali bin Hamshadh alone, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam al-Bayhaqi (450) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 41/ 286 also narrated it via Hammad bin Salamah from Humayd (al-Tawil) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: All its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are also reports from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud and Abd Allah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), transmitted by Imam al-Darimi (344) and (346) as mawquf on them, though there is weakness in both their chains.
Important point: The word "manhuman" (two who are insatiable/eager) in the hadith refers to two people who are intensely eager to attain the utmost limit of what they seek.
Reference / Source: According to Ibn al-Athir's "al-Nihayah", "al-nahmah" means reaching the utmost of one's resolve and pursuit in something; this explanation was given by Mulla Ali al-Qari in "Mirqat al-Mafatih".
