Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 377

It is narrated from Imam al-Hasan al-Basri that Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was relating the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said to him: "O Abu Nujayd, recite the Qur'an to us (that is, speak only of the Qur'an)." Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "You and your companions read the Qur'an. Could you tell me (from the Qur'an alone) about the prayer, its rules and its limits? Could you tell me the details of zakah on gold, camels, cattle and the other kinds of wealth? The truth is that I was present (with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) and you were absent." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prescribed for us in zakah such and such (details)." The man said: "You have given me life; may Allah keep you well throughout your life." Al-Hasan al-Basri said: That man did not die before he came to be counted among the jurists of the Muslims.
Uqbah bin Khalid al-Shanni is one of the trustworthy narrators of Basra; his hadiths are few, and they do not even reach a full ten.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: God willing, this narration is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "da'if" because of the jahalah (unknown status) of Uqbah bin Khalid al-Shanni, since Muslim bin Ibrahim al-Farahidi is alone in narrating from him; however, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and the author (al-Hakim) declared him trustworthy further on, and both of them (al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban) are known for leniency in declaring narrators trustworthy. Moreover, al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Imran bin Husayn is disputed, as passed under hadith (78); but both Uqbah and al-Hasan have corroboration.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it in "al-Thiqat" (7/ 247-248) and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "al-Faqih wa al-Mutafaqqih" (238) through the route of Abu Khalifah al-Fadl bin al-Hubab, Imam al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/ 369) from Ali bin Abd al-Aziz, and Ibn Makhlad through the route of Hamid bin Sahl al-Thaghri. All three of them narrate it from Muslim bin Ibrahim with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Only in the narration of al-Fadl bin al-Hubab is there al-Hasan al-Basri's explicit statement that he was with Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) at the time of this incident.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (237) transmitted a narration of similar meaning through the chain of Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi from Anbasah al-Ghanawi from al-Hasan al-Basri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Anbasah al-Ghanawi (Ibn Abi Ra'itah) is an unknown narrator.
Reference / Source: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (236) also narrated it through the chain of Ma'mar from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an from Abu Nadrah (al-Mundhir bin Malik) from Imran bin Husayn.
Grading: Ibn Jud'an is a weak narrator, but by the combination of all these routes this narration reaches the level of "hasan", God willing.
