Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 421

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usamah bin Sharik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and his Companions were sitting with him (so reverently) as though birds were perched on their heads. I gave the greeting of peace and sat down. Then some Bedouins came and began asking him about various things, until they asked: Should we seek medical treatment? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek treatment, for Allah has not created any disease without making a cure for it." Then they asked him about other things, and he said: "Servants of Allah, Allah has removed hardship (sin), except from a man who wrongfully attacks the honour of another man; that one has sinned and is ruined." Then they asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is the best thing that people are given? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Good character."
Imam al-Hakim says that this hadith is sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. In Imam Muslim's view its defect is that no one besides Ziyad bin Ilaqah narrated from Usamah bin Sharik, whereas I have built this book on the principle that a Companion's narration is taken even if he has only one narrator.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the third chain, the author's shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan is weak, and likewise in the second chain Bakr bin Bakkar is also weak, but both of them are corroborated (mutaba'ah) by other narrators, so the narration is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad 30/ (18454), Abu Dawud (3855) and al-Nasa'i (5844, 5850, 7511) narrated it in full and in abridged form through various routes from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Imam Ahmad 30/ (18453, 18455, 18456), Abu Dawud (2015), Ibn Majah (3436), al-Tirmidhi (2038), al-Nasa'i (7512) and Ibn Hibban (478, 486, 6061, 6064) recorded it through various routes from Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah.
Important point: This narration will come again with the author (al-Hakim) later at numbers (7618, 8406, 8407) through routes from Ziyad bin 'Ilaqah.
Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "illa imra'an iqtarada imra'an" mean: "except a person who backbit his brother, insulted him, or harmed him in his person". The word "iqtirad" (taking a loan) is used here for backbiting and harm because it will have to be repaid in the Hereafter. It is also possible that "iqtarada" means "to cut", as al-Suyuti said: he attacked him and cut into him by backbiting. This explanation is mentioned by al-Sindi in his marginal notes on "Musnad Ahmad".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of 'Ali bin al-Aqmar from Usamah bin Sharik occurs in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (495) in the story of his praying over a funeral, but its chain is "very weak".
Note / Clarification: As for the defect the author referred to as the reason Imam Muslim did not record it, it has already been discussed in the commentary on hadith number (97).
