Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 422

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Qurt that he said: I entered the mosque and saw a circle where people were sitting (in such silence and reverence) as though their heads had been cut off, and a man was narrating hadith to them; it turned out to be Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, and I used to ask him about evil (then he mentioned the complete hadith).
The text of this hadith is in the two Sahihs; it has been mentioned here to show listening attentively to the narrator of hadith and how to show him respect.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain Salih bin Rustam (Abu 'Amir al-Khazzaz al-Basri) made a mistake; the hadith scholars differ about him, and overall he is "hasan al-hadith", but he was prone to errors (awham). Imam Ibn Hibban said in "Mashahir 'Ulama' al-Amsar" (1190) that he was one of the hafiz scholars who used to make mistakes. His mistake here is that he narrated it with the chain "Humayd bin Hilal, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Qurt, from Hudhayfah", whereas this 'Abd al-Rahman bin Qurt is not known among the Iraqis except in this hadith through this route.
Important point: The "mahfuz" (correct) narration of this hadith is that of Humayd bin Hilal, from Nasr bin 'Asim, from al-Yashkuri (there is disagreement about al-Yashkuri's name: Subay' bin Khalid, Khalid bin Subay', and so on). Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, who is "thiqah thiqah", narrated it that way from Humayd. Nasr bin 'Asim is thiqah, and al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban mentioned al-Yashkuri among the trustworthy, so he is hasan al-hadith.
Reference / Source: The mahfuz narration of Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, from Humayd, from Nasr bin 'Asim was recorded by Imam Ahmad 38/ (23282), Abu Dawud (4246), al-Nasa'i (7978), Ibn Hibban (5963) and others. See the full takhrij in "Musnad Ahmad".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Qatadah also narrated it from Nasr bin 'Asim, which will come later at number (8537).
Important point: The narration of Salih bin Rustam will come later in full at number (8535) through the route of 'Abbas al-Duri from Sa'id bin 'Amir. Imam al-Nasa'i (7979) also narrated it with the chain of Ahmad bin Harb from Sa'id bin 'Amir.
Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah (3981) narrated a portion of it through the route of Muhammad bin 'Umar bin 'Ali al-Muqaddami from Sa'id bin 'Amir.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A narration with a similar meaning has already appeared at number (391) through the route of Abu Idris al-Khawlani from Hudhayfah, and it is in al-Bukhari and Muslim.
