Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 401

ما أخبرنا أبو علي الحسين بن علي الحافظ، أخبرنا سهل بن أحمد بن عثمان الواسطي من كتابه، حدثنا يحيى بن حبيب بن عَرَبيّ، حدثنا المعتمِر بن سليمان قال: قال أبو سفيان سليمان بن سفيان المَدِيني، عن عمرو بن دينار، عن ابن عمر، أنَّ نبيّ الله ﷺ قال: "لا يَجمَعُ الله أمَّتي على ضلالةٍ أبدًا، ويد الله على الجماعةِ هكذا، فاتَّبِعوا السَّوادَ الأعظمَ، فإنه مَن شَذَّ شَذَّ في النار" (1). والخلاف السابع على المعتمِر فيه:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will never gather my Ummah upon misguidance, and the Hand of Allah is over the Jama'ah like this (he (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand); so follow al-Sawad al-A'zam (the great majority), for whoever separates from the Jama'ah goes off alone into the Fire."

(1) صحيح لغيره، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف سليمان بن سفيان.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrih", though this chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Sulayman bin Sufyan.
وأخرجه الطبراني (13624) عن سهل بن أبي سهل الواسطي، عن يحيى بن حبيب بن عربي، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani (13624) narrated it through the route of Sahl bin Abi Sahl al-Wasiti from Yahya bin Habib bin Arabi with this same chain.
وأخرجه أبو عمرو الداني في "السنن الواردة في الفتن" (368) من طريق محمد بن هشام بن أبي خيرة، عن المعتمر بن سليمان، به.
Reference / Source: Abu Amr al-Dani narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (368) through the route of Muhammad bin Hisham bin Abi Khiyarah from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman with this same chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني (13623) من طريق محمد بن أبي بكر المقدمي عن معتمر بن سليمان، عن مرزوق مولي آل طلحة، عن عمرو بن دينار، به - وهذا اختلاف آخر في إسناد هذا الحديث لم يذكره الحاكم، ومرزوق هذا لا يعرف، والمحفوظ سليمان المدني، وهو مولى آل طلحة بن عبيد الله.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani (13623) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, from Mu'tamir bin Sulayman, from Marzuq (the freed client of the family of Talhah), from Amr bin Dinar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is another variation in the chain of this hadith which Imam al-Hakim did not mention, and this narrator "Marzuq" is unknown (la yu'raf), while the preserved (mahfuz) narration is that of Sulayman al-Madani, who is the freed client of the family of Talhah bin Ubayd Allah.
