حدثناه أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، أخبرنا العباس بن الوليد بن مَزْيَد البَيروتي، حدثنا محمد بن شعيب بن شابُور، حدثني النُّعمان بن المنذر، عن مكحول قال: وَجِعَ معاذُ بن جبل يومًا وعنده يزيد بن عَمِيرة الزُّبيدي، فبكى عليه يزيدُ، فقال له معاذ: ما يُبكِيكَ؟ قال: يُبكِيني ما كنتُ أسألُك كلَّ يومٍ، يَنقطِعُ عني، فقال معاذ: إنَّ العلم والإيمان بَشَاشَتان، قُمْ فالتمِسْهما، قال يزيد: وعندَ مَن أَلتمسُهما؟ فقال معاذ: عند أربعةِ نفرٍ عند عُويمِر أبي الدرداء، وعند عبد الله بن مسعود، وعند سلمان الفارسي، وعند عبد الله بن سَلَام، فإنه كان يقال: "إنه عاشرُ عَشَرةٍ في الجنة"، قال يزيد: فقلت: وعند عمر بن الخَطَّاب؟ فقال: لا تَسألْه عن شيء، فإنه عنك مشغول (2). وقد روى الزُّهْريُّ عن أبي إدريسَ طَرَفًا من هذا الحديث:
Makhul relates that one day Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill while Yazid bin Amirah al-Zubaydi was with him. Seeing his condition, Yazid began to weep. Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Why are you weeping? He said: I am weeping at the cutting off of the knowledge that I used to acquire from you every day. Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Knowledge and faith are like a fragrance; get up and seek them. Yazid asked: With whom shall I seek them? Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: With four people: Uwaymir Abu al-Darda', Abdullah bin Mas'ud, Salman al-Farisi and Abdullah bin Salam, for it used to be said about him: "He is the tenth of the ten fortunate ones of Paradise." Yazid asked: And Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: Do not ask him about anything (now), for he is occupied with your affairs (the responsibilities of the caliphate).

(2) صحيح بما قبله، وهذا إسناد منقطع، مكحول لم يدرك معاذ بن جبل يقينًا، ويغلب على ظننا أنه لم يدرك يزيد بن عميرة أيضًا فهو تابعي كبير مخضرم.
Grading: It is "sahih" through the support of the previous narrations, but this chain is "munqati'" (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is certain that Imam Makhul did not meet Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), and the most likely view is that he did not meet Yazid bin Umayrah either, since he (Yazid) was a senior Tabi'i and a mukhadram (one who lived in both the Jahiliyyah and Islam but did not see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
