Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 417

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The period from one obligatory prayer to the next obligatory prayer is an expiation for sins, and from one Friday to the next Friday, and from one month (Ramadan) to the next Ramadan, is an expiation for sins." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except for three sins," and I understood that this was something particular. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Associating partners with Allah, breaking the pledge of allegiance, and abandoning the Sunnah." I said: O Messenger of Allah, as for associating partners, we know it; what is "breaking the pledge" and "abandoning the Sunnah"? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Breaking the pledge is that you give your pledge of allegiance at the hand of a man (a ruler), then turn against him and rise up against him with your sword; and abandoning the Sunnah is that you go out from the Jama'ah."
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, and there is no hidden defect ('illah) in it.

Grading: All of its narrators are thiqah, but with this wording (siyaq) the narration is "gharib".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id bin Mas'ud in the chain is Sa'id bin Mas'ud bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Marwazi; al-Khalili mentioned him in "al-Irshad" (818) and declared him thiqah, and Imam al-Dhahabi gave his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 12/ 504 and said: "one of the trustworthy narrators". Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him under the name "Sa'd" and called him "saduq". As for 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib, he is called "al-Ansari" only in this narration of Sa'id bin Mas'ud. In this generation, among those who narrate from Abu Hurayrah, there is an "Abu al-Sa'ib al-Ansari", who is a narrator of Sahih Muslim, and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar wrote in "al-Taqrib" that his name is said to be 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib. However, in the narration of Hushaym in Imam al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3348) he is called "'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib al-Kindi". If this is preserved (and Hushaym is more trustworthy and a better memorizer than Sa'id bin Mas'ud), then al-Hafiz al-Mizzi mentioned in "Tahdhib al-Kamal" a narration of 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib al-Kindi from Abu Hurayrah as well, although most of his narrations are from the Successors. Whichever of the two he is, both are "thiqah".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 16/ (10576) through Yazid bin Harun, who contradicted Sa'id bin Mas'ud and narrated it as "from al-'Awwam bin Hawshab, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib, from a man of the Ansar, from Abu Hurayrah", that is, he added an "unnamed intermediary" (a man of the Ansar) to the chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Sa'id bin Mas'ud (without the intermediary) is supported by the narration of Hushaym in "Musnad Ahmad" 12/ (7129), and also by the narration of Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq, which will come later in this book at number (7858). Both of these narrators are thiqah and well known, and they narrated it from al-'Awwam bin Hawshab, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib, from Abu Hurayrah, without any additional intermediary.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni mentioned it in "al-'Ilal" (2119) and mentioned only the narrations of Hushaym and of Yazid bin Harun (which contains the unnamed intermediary), then said: "The version of Yazid is closer to being correct". Yet experts in narrator criticism such as Abu Hatim al-Razi ranked Hushaym above Yazid bin Harun in memorization.
Reference / Source: The first part of this hadith was narrated by Imam Ahmad 15/ (9197) and Imam Muslim (233) (16) through the route of 'Umar bin Ishaq (the freed slave of Za'idah), from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "The five prayers, from one Friday to the next, and from one Ramadan to the next, are an expiation for what is between them, as long as the major sins are avoided".
Note / Clarification: What is well known in the narration of Abu Hurayrah is the mention of major sins in general, without restricting them to a specific number (such as three), and a large group narrated it from him that way in Muslim and elsewhere; for details see the takhrij of hadith (7129) in "Musnad Ahmad".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The well-known person with this name ('Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib) is "'Abd Allah bin al-Sa'ib bin Abi al-Sa'ib al-Makhzumi al-Makki"; both he and his father were Companions, and he is from Quraysh, not from the Ansar. Imam Muslim narrated one hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from him. So perhaps what occurred here with Imam al-Hakim (calling him al-Ansari) is a mistake (wahm); and Allah knows best.
