Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 396

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah will never gather this Ummah upon misguidance," and he said: "The Hand of Allah is over the Jama'ah, so follow "al-Sawad al-A'zam" (the great majority), for whoever separates from the Jama'ah goes off alone into Hell."
Khalid bin Yazid al-Qarni is an early Shaykh of the people of Baghdad; had he preserved this hadith accurately, we would have judged it sahih.

Grading: Apart from the words "man shadhdha shadhdha fi al-nar" (whoever separates from the Jama'ah is separated into the Fire), this hadith is "sahih li-ghayrih" (authentic due to other supporting reports).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the chain of this hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) there is "idtirab" (inconsistency) over the name of Mu'tamir bin Sulayman's shaykh. The correct view is that he is a different Sulayman (not his father Sulayman bin Tarkhan), and the name that appears here in the narration of Khalid al-Qarni is his error (wahm). This Sulayman is in fact "Sulayman bin Sufyan al-Madini", who is also called Abu Sufyan, and he is a "da'if" (weak) narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Lalika'i narrated it in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (154) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 3/ 37 through two routes from Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Shakir with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Apart from the portion "wa man shadhdha shadhdha fi al-nar", this hadith has other supporting reports by which it is strengthened and becomes sahih, among them the narration of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which will come with the author under numbers (403) and (404), and its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: For its other supporting reports, see "Musnad Ahmad" 35/ (21294) and "Jami' al-Tirmidhi" (2305 - al-Risalah edition).
