It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stood at "al-Jabiyah" and said: May Allah have mercy on a man who heard my words and retained them. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing among us just as I am standing, then he said: "Safeguard me with regard to my Companions (their honour), then those who come after them, then those who come after them (he said it three times). Then turmoil will increase and lying will appear; a man will give testimony though his testimony was not sought, and he will swear an oath though no oath was asked of him. Whoever of you wants the very centre of Paradise, let him hold to the Jama'ah (the united body of Muslims), for Satan is with the one who is alone, and he is further from two. Let no man be alone with a woman, for Satan is the third of them. Whoever is pleased by his good deed and grieved by his bad deed, he is a believer."
The second hadith by which the scholars argued that consensus (ijma') is a proof is a hadith narrated with disagreement from al-Mu'tamir bin Sulayman in seven ways; the first of them is as follows.

(896). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name is written like this (Muhammad bin Muhajir bin Mismar), whereas we did not find anyone among the narrators by this name. The correct view is that this is the narration of "Ibrahim bin Muhajir bin Mismar", and he is a "da'if" (weak) narrator. Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" 20/ 282 - 283 through the route of Imam al-Hakim with the correct name, Ibrahim, and likewise the same correct name is mentioned in Ibn Abi Asim's book "al-Sunnah" (86) and (896).
Grading: It is "sahih" on the strength of the supporting reports of the preceding narration, though its own chain is "da'if", as explained in the previous note. Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir narrated it in 20/ 282 - 283 through the route of Imam al-Bayhaqi, from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, from Abu Sa'id Abd al-Rahman bin Ahmad with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim narrated it in abridged form in "al-Sunnah" (86) and (896) via Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir al-Hizami. Details of the narration: He limited himself to these words only: "Whoever wants the middle (best part) of Paradise, let him hold fast to the Jama'ah, for Satan is with the one who is alone." He also made it the narration of Ibrahim bin Muhajir from his father from Amir bin Sa'd. Note / Clarification: The word "al-harj" means killing and the turmoil and disorder that arises among people.
