It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Soon people will beat the livers of camels (in search of knowledge, that is, drive them hard on long journeys), yet they will not find any scholar more learned than the scholar of Madinah."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; and Ibn Uyaynah would sometimes narrate it as a riwayah (attributing it directly).

Grading: Its chain is sahih provided that Ibn Jurayj's hearing from Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus) is established. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement from Sufyan bin Uyaynah in this narration over Ibn Jurayj explicitly stating that he heard it; the majority narrated it with 'an'anah (Musnad Ahmad 13/7980). However, Harun bin Ma'ruf (al-Tahawi 4016), Ali bin al-Madini and Muhammad bin Umar bin Safwan, narrating from Sufyan, stated explicitly that Ibn Jurayj heard it ("haddathana"). Ibn al-Madini and Ibn Safwan also mentioned Abu al-Zubayr's explicit statement of hearing from Abu Salih. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (vol. 13, 7980), al-Tirmidhi (2680) and Ibn Hibban (3736) narrated it via Sufyan bin Uyaynah. Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "a hasan hadith". Reference / Source: Imam al-Nasa'i narrated it in "al-Kubra" (4277) via Sufyan bin Uyaynah, but there the name "Abu al-Zinad" is given in place of Abu al-Zubayr. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Nasa'i says that this is an error in the name, and the correct form is "Abu al-Zubayr from Abu Salih".
Important point: What the author (al-Hakim) means here is that it is mawquf on Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), but the experts in the science of hadith who came after Imam al-Hakim (such as al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, Ibn al-Salah and others) disagreed with him. General principle: According to the experts, these expressions ("yablughu bihi" and the like) are indirect expressions used to raise the hadith as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, in what he narrated from Sufyan ('Ilal al-Khallal 67), pointed to its being mawquf: that Sufyan once narrated it as mawquf and did not take it beyond Abu Hurayrah (to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)).
