Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 310

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! Which piece of land is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know." He asked: Which part is the worst? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know." He said: Ask your Lord. So when Jibril (peace be upon him) came down, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been asked which place is the best and which is the worst, and I said that I did not know." Jibril (peace be upon him) said: And I too do not know until I ask my Lord. The narrator says: At that, Jibril (peace be upon him) trembled so violently that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) almost fell unconscious. Then Allah said: "O Jibril! Muhammad asks you which is the best place, and you said that you did not know; then he asked which is the worst place, and you said that you did not know. (Listen!) The best places are the mosques, and the worst places are the markets."
This hadith has another shahid (supporting narration) from the hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to external support).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered ikhtilat (deterioration of memory) at the end of his life, and Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid heard from him after his ikhtilat.
Important point: Imam al-Dhahabi in "al-Uluww" (238) called it "a gharib hadith with a sound chain", perhaps because of the supporting reports; for immediately before it he mentioned a hadith of Abu Umamah with the same meaning, though he did not consider that one strong.
Note / Clarification: This hadith will come later at number (2178) via Ali bin al-Hasan al-Hisinjani and Yahya bin al-Mughirah al-Sa'di from Jarir, just like the narration of Ishaq bin Isma'il here.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (1599) narrated it in abridged form via Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In it is mentioned that "Jibril asked Mika'il", and this narration is shadh (contrary to the correct narrations).
