Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 358

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (like the previous saying).
This is an authentic musnad hadith on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Of this kind, they recorded the narration of Abu Ishaq containing the words: "There are only two things: guidance and speech. The best speech is the speech of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is also "sahih", like the previous one.
Reference / Source: Ibn Battah narrated it in his book (1/ 358) through the chain of Imam Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak from Sufyan al-Thawri, by this same route.

Note / Clarification: Attributing this report to the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) is an oversight on the part of the author (al-Hakim).
Reference / Source: This narration is in Sunan Ibn Majah (46), narrated marfu' through the chain of Musa bin Uqbah from Abu Ishaq (Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) from Abu al-Ahwas (Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i) from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Contrary to Musa bin Uqbah, Imam Shu'bah, Isra'il and Sharik narrated it from Abu Ishaq as a saying of Ibn Mas'ud (mawquf). Imam al-Daraqutni says in "al-'Ilal" (5/ 323) that the version of Shu'bah and those who corroborated him is more correct. Ma'mar also narrated it as mawquf in his "Jami'" (20076).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated a report of similar meaning in his "Sahih" under numbers (6098) and (7277) through two other chains, as a saying of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) (mawquf).
