Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 437

Bahz bin Hakim narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Mu'awiyah bin Haydah), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) detained a man from their people on some accusation. A man from their people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was delivering a sermon and said: O Muhammad, for what crime have you detained my neighbours? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then he said again: Some people say that you forbid evil but do it yourself in private (Allah forbid). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What are you saying?" So I (the narrator) began to steer the conversation between them, fearing that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would understand the matter and invoke a supplication against my people after which they would never prosper. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) understood it and said: "Have they said that (or has one of them said it)? By Allah, if I were to do so, my state would be the same (as that of wrongdoers). Release his neighbours."
The discussion about the Sahifah of Bahz bin Hakim has already passed, and the supporting narrations of this hadith are in the two Sahihs (such as the incident of the Najrani cloak and the story of the Battle of Hunayn).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 20019) and Abu Dawud (3630) narrated it through the route of 'Abd al-Razzaq (bin Hammam) with this same chain.
Details of the narration: The narration of Abu Dawud is in these abridged words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) detained a man on suspicion"; these same words will come with the author (al-Hakim) later at number (7240). Likewise, Imam al-Tirmidhi (1417) and al-Nasa'i (7331) narrated it in abridged form through the route of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak from Ma'mar, and Imam al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 20017 and 20042) and Abu Dawud (3631) narrated it at length through the route of Isma'il bin Ibrahim (Ibn 'Ulayyah), from Bahz bin Hakim.
Important point: This narration will come later at number (6853) through the route of Abu Qaza'ah from Hakim bin Mu'awiyah.
Important point: On this subject, see the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that will come with the author later at number (7241).
Note / Clarification: The words of the hadith "tastakhli bihi" mean: to take something exclusively for oneself, or to be alone with it.

Important point: See hadith number (143).

Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded it at (3405) and Imam Muslim at (1062).

Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded it at (3149) and Imam Muslim at (1057).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Attributing this hadith to the "Sahihayn" (al-Bukhari and Muslim) is an oversight by the author (al-Hakim); rather, it is recorded in "Sunan Sa'id bin Mansur" (2755), and through his route Tammam al-Razi narrated it in his "Fawa'id" (630).
Important point: However, its meaning is found in Sahih al-Bukhari (2821) and (3148) in the hadith of Muhammad bin Jubayr bin Mut'im from his father Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him).
