Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 450

فأخبرَناه علي بن حَمْشَاذَ العَدْل، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي والعباس بن الفضل الأسفاطي قالا: حدثنا إسماعيل بن أبي أُوَيس، حدثني كَثِير بن عبد الله بن عمرو بن عوف بن زيد عن أبيه، عن جدِّه قال: كنا قعودًا حولَ رسول الله ﷺ في مسجده فقال: "لتَسلُكُنَّ سَنَنَ مَن قبلَكم، حَذْوَ النعلِ بالنعل، ولَتَاخُذُنَّ مثلَ أخذِهم إنْ شِبرًا فشِبرٌ، وإنْ ذراعًا فذراعٌ، وإنْ باعًا فباعٌ، حتى لو دخلوا جُحْر ضبٍّ لدخلتم فيه. ألا إنَّ بني إسرائيل افتَرَقَت علي موسى علي سبعين (1) فِرقةً، كلُّها ضالَّةٌ إِلَّا فرقةً واحدة: الإسلامُ، وجماعتُهم، وإنها افتَرقَت على عيسى ابن مريم على إحدى وسبعين فرقةً، كلُّها ضالَّة إلّا فرقةً واحدة: الإسلامُ وجماعتُهم، ثم إنكم تكونون (2) على اثنتين وسبعين فِرقةً، كلُّها ضالَّة إلّا فرقةً واحدة: الإسلامُ وجماعتُهم" (3). آخر كتاب العلم [كتاب الطهارة] حدثنا الحاكم أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الحافظُ إملاء في ذي الحِجَّة سنة ثلاث وتسعين وثلاث مئة:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his mosque when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will surely follow the ways of those before you, step by step, and you will surely take as they took: if a hand-span, then a hand-span; if a cubit, then a cubit; if an arm's length, then an arm's length; to the extent that if they entered the hole of a lizard (dabb), you would enter it too. Listen! The Children of Israel split in the time of Musa (peace be upon him) into seventy (70) sects, all of them astray except one, and that one was Islam and their Jama'ah. Then they split in the time of Isa (peace be upon him) into seventy-one (71) sects, all astray except one, and that one was Islam and their Jama'ah. Then you will split into seventy-two (72) sects, all of them astray except one, and that one will be Islam and their Jama'ah."

(3) إسناده ضعيف بمرّة من أجل كثير بن عبد الله ابن عمرو المزني، فإنه متفق على ضعفه.
Grading: This chain is very weak, because it includes Kathir bin 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr al-Muzani, whose weakness is agreed upon by the hadith scholars.
وأخرجه ابن أبي عاصم في "السنة" (45)، والطبراني في "الكبير" 17/ (3)، والآجريّ في "الشريعة" (33) من طريقين عن كثير بن عبد الله، بهذا الإسناد. وهو عند الآجري مختصر.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (45), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (17/ 3) and al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (33) through two routes from Kathir bin 'Abd Allah with this same chain; in al-Ajurri the narration is given in abridged form.
