فَضْلُ الْعِلْمِ أَحَبُّ مِنْ فَضْلِ الْعِبَادَةِ وَخَيْرُ الدِّينِ الْوَرَعُ
The merit of knowledge is more beloved than the merit of worship, and the best of religion is scrupulousness

حدَّثَناه أبو علي الحافظ، حدثنا الهيثم بن خلف الدُّوري، حدثنا عبَّاد بن يعقوب، حدثنا عبد الله بن عبد القُدوس، عن الأعمش، عن مطرِّف بن الشِّخِّير، عن حُذَيفة قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "فضلُ العلم خيرٌ من فضلِ العبادة، وخيرُ دِينِكم الوَرَعُ" (2).
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The virtue of knowledge is better than the virtue of worship, and the best trait of your religion is piety and scrupulousness."

(2) إسناده ضعيف لضعف عبد الله بن عبد القدوس، وللاختلاف فيه على الأعمش كما سلف عند الحديث (318).
Grading: The chain is weak because Abd Allah bin Abd al-Quddus is a weak narrator, and because there is disagreement in its chain from al-A'mash, as has passed under hadith (318).
وأخرجه الترمذي في "العلل الكبير" (633)، والبزار في "مسنده" (2969)، والطبراني في "الأوسط" (3960)، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 4/ 198، وأبو نعيم في "الحلية" 2/ 211، والبيهقي في "المدخل إلى السنن الكبرى" (455) من طريق عباد بن يعقوب، بهذا الإسناد. قال الترمذي: سألت محمدًا عن هذا الحديث فلم يعدَّ هذا الحديث محفوظًا، ولم يعرف هذا عن حذيفة عن النبي ﷺ، وقال البيهقي: هذا الحديث يروى مرفوعًا بأسانيد ضعيفة، وهو صحيح من قول مطرف بن عبد الله بن الشخير.
Grading: It is weak as marfu', but sahih as the saying of Mutarrif bin al-Shikhkhir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tirmidhi says: I asked Imam al-Bukhari (Muhammad bin Isma'il) about it, and he did not consider it mahfuz (preserved), nor did he know any such narration from Hudhayfah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Imam al-Bayhaqi says that it is weak through marfu' chains, whereas its being the saying of Mutarrif is sahih.
