Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 325

It is narrated from Ibn Buraydah that Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out of the bathhouse of Hims and said to his servant: Bring me my sibti (tanned leather) sandals. He put them on, then entered the mosque of Hims and prayed two rak'ahs. When he finished, he saw some people sitting, and asked them: Why are you sitting here? They said: We offered the obligatory prayer, then a preacher gave an admonition, and when he finished, we sat down to discuss the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There is no one among those who met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who narrates fewer hadiths than I; I will tell you two things that I memorised from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "A person who rules over people, with men standing (humbly) before him, and who loves that many disputants and petitioners gather around him (that is, he is arrogant), how will he enter Paradise?" He said: One day I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque and there were some people sitting there. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What keeps you sitting here?" They said: We prayed the obligatory prayer, then sat down to discuss the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when Allah mentions something, its mention becomes very great."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and Abdullah bin Buraydah al-Aslami heard several hadiths from Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word has been distorted in the printed edition. "Al-sibtiyyah" refers to sandals made of cow leather tanned with qaraz (a type of tree); they are called "sibtiyyah" because the hair is removed from them (sabt), or because they become soft through tanning. This explanation was given by Ibn al-Athir in "al-Nihayah".

Grading: The chain is strong (qawi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of the chain are identified as follows: Abu Ma'mar (Abd Allah bin Amr al-Muq'ad), Abd al-Warith (bin Sa'id), al-Husayn (bin Dhakwan al-Mu'allim) and Ibn Buraydah (Abd Allah bin Buraydah).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Madkhal" (418), and Abu Mansur al-Daylami in "Musnad al-Firdaws", via the chain of Imam al-Hakim. In al-Daylami's version it is a short narration consisting of only one sentence.
Important point: Shaykh al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him) made an oversight here: he mentioned it in "al-Silsilah al-Da'ifah" (3046) and called it weak, taking the narrator "al-Husayn" to be al-Husayn bin Waqid, whereas he is "al-Husayn bin Dhakwan al-Mu'allim", who is thiqah (his lineage is stated explicitly in al-Daylami's narration). Moreover, Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id's narration is well known from Husayn al-Mu'allim, not from Ibn Waqid. The Shaykh also treated Imam al-Hakim's shaykh Abu Bakr al-Darabardi as a defect by calling him unknown, whereas Imam al-Hakim himself strongly affirmed his reliability and praised him.

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word has been distorted into "sab'in" (seventy), whereas according to the context and the date of dictation the correct word is "sittin" (sixty) (in which the ta' comes before the sin).
