I discussed this chapter with our Shaykh Abu Ali al-Hafiz and asked: "Is any of these chains from Ata authentic?" He said: "No." I asked: "Why?" He said: "Because Ata did not hear it from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)." So we received this hadith in which an unnamed man stands between Ata and Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is asked about knowledge and conceals it, Allah will bridle him on the Day of Resurrection with a bridle of fire." I said to him: "Azhar bin Marwan or your Shaykh Ibn Ahmad al-Wasiti made an error in this, and an error from either of them is not unlikely."

Grading: The hadith is "sahih", but this particular chain is "weak" because of an unnamed (mubham) intermediary between Ata' and Abu Hurayrah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct way is that this intermediary be dropped, as in the narration of Hammad bin Salamah; and according to Imam Abu Dawud, Hammad bin Salamah is the greatest expert among those narrating from Ali bin al-Hakam. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in various places (13/ 7571, 8049, etc.), Imam Abu Dawud (3658) and Ibn Hibban (95), via Hammad bin Salamah, which is a "sahih" chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammad was corroborated by Umarah bin Zadhan (Musnad Ahmad 16/ 10420, Ibn Majah 261, al-Tirmidhi 2649); Umarah is "hasan al-hadith" in corroborations, and Imam al-Tirmidhi called this narration "hasan".
