Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 412

حدَّثَناه أبو بكر بن أبي دارِمٍ الحافظ بالكوفة، حدثنا عبد الله بن غنَّام بن حفص بن غِيَاث، حدثني أَبي، حدثنا أبو بكر بن عيّاش، عن عاصم، عن أبي صالح، عن معاوية قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "مَن فارق الجماعةَ شِبرًا، دَخَلَ النار" (2). الحديث الخامس فيما يدلُّ على أنَّ الإجماع حُجَّة:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever leaves the Jama'ah of the Muslims even by the measure of a handspan enters the Fire."

(2) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة حال غنام بن حفص، وأبو بكر بن أبي دارم متكلَّم فيه. عاصم: هو ابن أبي النّجود، وأبو صالح: هو ذكوان السَّمّان، ومعاوية: هو ابن أبي سفيان. ¤ ¤ والمحفوظ في الحديث ما أخرجه أحمد 28/ (16876) عن أسود بن عامر، وابن حبان (4573) من طريق محمد بن يزيد بن رفاعة كلاهما عن أبي بكر بن عياش، بهذا الإسناد، بلفظ: "من مات بغير إمام، مات ميتة جاهلية". وإسناده حسن.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason for its weakness is that the status of Ghannam bin Hafs is "majhul" (unknown), and Abu Bakr bin Abi Darim has also been criticized. "'Asim" mentioned in the chain is 'Asim bin Abi al-Nujud, "Abu Salih" is Dhakwan al-Samman, and "Mu'awiyah" is Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him).
Important point: The "mahfuz" (established) wording of this hadith is what Imam Ahmad 28/ (16876) narrated from Aswad bin 'Amir and Ibn Hibban (4573) through the route of Muhammad bin Yazid bin Rifa'ah; both of them narrate it from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash with this same chain in these words: "Whoever dies without an imam dies a death of Jahiliyyah". The chain of this route is "hasan".
