It is narrated from Zirr bin Hubaysh that he came to Sayyiduna Safwan bin Assal al-Muradi (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask him about something. He (Safwan) asked him: Have you come such a distance to me only for this purpose? He said: Yes, I have come only for this. So he said (giving him glad tidings): Rejoice, for whoever sets out from his home in search of knowledge, the angels spread out their wings for him, pleased with what he is doing, until he returns.
This chain is sahih (authentic). Abd al-Wahhab bin Bukht is among the trustworthy Egyptian narrators whose hadith is compiled; the two Shaykhs used him as evidence but did not record this hadith. This hadith revolves around the narration of Asim bin Bahdalah from Zirr, which the two Shaykhs ignored completely; but there are other trustworthy supporting narrators from Zirr bin Hubaysh besides Asim, among them al-Minhal bin Amr, on whom the two Shaykhs agree.
Grading: The chain of this narration is "sahih". Reference / Source: This hadith was narrated by Imam Ahmad (30/ 18093), Ibn Majah (226) and Ibn Hibban (85, 1319, 1325) via Ma'mar; by Ahmad (18095), al-Tirmidhi (3535) and Ibn Hibban via Sufyan bin Uyaynah; by Ahmad via Hammad bin Salamah and Hammad bin Zayd; and by Imam al-Nasa'i via Shu'bah. All five of these narrate it with the chain Asim bin Abi al-Najud from Zirr bin Hubaysh. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ma'mar and Hammad bin Salamah narrated the mention of the angels spreading their wings as "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), whereas in the narration of Hammad bin Zayd it is given as a "balagh" ("it reached me"). Important point: What is apparent is that this saying is indeed marfu', because an unseen matter such as the actions of the angels cannot be said on the basis of one's own opinion. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) (see: Ahmad 36/ 21715, Abu Dawud 3641, Ibn Majah 223, al-Tirmidhi 2682, Ibn Hibban 88). Grading: However, the chain of this supporting report is "weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is thus in the manuscripts, while in the printed edition it is written "al-Basriyyin" (from the people of Basra); both are errors, because the narrator Abd al-Wahhab bin Bukht was originally from Syria and later settled in Madinah, as is clear from his biographical sources.
