Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration is weak as "marfu'" (as a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), because of idtirab (inconsistency) and disagreement in its chain from Imam al-A'mash.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct view is that it is the saying of the eminent Tabi'i Mutarrif bin Abd Allah bin al-Shikhkhir, as Imam al-Daraqutni clarified in "al-'Ilal" (591) and (1935) and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "al-Madkhal" (456). "Al-Hakam" in the chain refers to al-Hakam bin Utaybah al-Kufi.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan al-Kubra" (454) from Imam Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi narrated it in "Nawadir al-Usul" (1125) from Abd Allah bin Abi Ziyad, and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Adab" (1009) and "al-Zuhd" (821) via Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab al-Farra'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both these narrators narrate from Khalid bin Makhlad al-Qatawani, and neither of them mentioned al-Hakam bin Utaybah in their narration, like the next narration of Ibn Numayr in the author's book.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Abd al-Quddus differed, narrating it via al-A'mash (Sulayman bin Mihran) from Mutarrif bin al-Shikhkhir from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), as will come later in the author's book at number (321).
Grading: This narration is weak because its narrator Abu Muti' al-Hakam bin Abd Allah al-Balkhi is weak.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Daraqutni narrated it in "al-'Ilal" 10/ 146 via al-A'mash from Abu Salih (Dhakwan al-Samman) from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A further variation is that, according to one report, it is al-A'mash from Salim bin Abi al-Ja'd from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), while al-Musayyab bin Sharik narrated it via al-A'mash from Salim from Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Imam al-Daraqutni says in "al-'Ilal" 4/ 319 that nothing from these chains is established; rather, the correct view is that it is Mutarrif bin Abd Allah bin al-Shikhkhir's own saying (mawquf).
Grading: This report is established from Mutarrif bin al-Shikhkhir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid (who is a thiqah and thabt (reliable, precise) narrator) differed from all of them, narrating it from al-A'mash as: "It reached me from Mutarrif that he said", and making it a saying of Mutarrif.
Reference / Source: Abu Khaythamah narrated it in the book "al-'Ilm" (13), and via his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 58/ 306.
Important point: Qatadah (bin Di'amah al-Sadusi) also narrated it as a saying of Mutarrif (see: Ibn Sa'd's al-Tabaqat 9/ 142, Imam Ahmad's al-Zuhd 1335, Ya'qub bin Sufyan's al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh 2/ 82, al-Bayhaqi's al-Madkhal 457, Ibn Abd al-Barr's Bayan al-'Ilm 104, and Ibn Asakir). Likewise Humayd bin Hilal also called it a saying of Mutarrif.
Grading: The "mahfuz" (preserved, correct) view is that it is the saying of Mutarrif bin al-Shikhkhir. And Allah knows best.
Grading: The chain is weak because of inqita' (a break in the chain).
Details of the narration: On this topic there is a marfu' narration from Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), which Abu al-Shaykh transmitted in "al-Amthal" (203) via Makhul; but Makhul's narration from Ubadah is "mursal", so the chain is broken.
Important point: "Fadl al-'ilm" (the excess of knowledge) means that the voluntary degree of knowledge is superior to the voluntary degree of deeds, and "fadl al-'ilm" refers to knowledge beyond the obligatory amount.
