Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Fulayh bin Sulayman differed in its chain from someone more trustworthy than him (as will come), and Fulayh himself is not very strong.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it (78) via two routes from Abd Allah bin Wahb, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (14/8457), Abu Dawud (3664), and Ibn Majah (252) narrated it via two routes from Fulayh bin Sulayman.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Za'idah bin Qudamah, one of the thiqah narrators, differed from Fulayh: he narrated it from Abd Allah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Ma'mar, from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban, who said: "A group of the people of Iraq told me that they passed by Abu Dharr and asked him, and he narrated to them and said to them" (and then mentioned something like this hadith) as mawquf, the saying of Abu Dharr.
Reference / Source: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (44), and via him Ibn Abd al-Barr in "Jami' Bayan al-Ilm" (1129), from Za'idah.
Grading: It is by this that Abu Zur'ah al-Razi declared it defective, as Ibn Abi Hatim reported from him in "Ilal al-Hadith" (2819); and this (mawquf) chain is weak because the group of Iraqis is unknown (majhul).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Besides the hadiths of Jabir bin Abd Allah and Ka'b bin Malik that will come with the author (al-Hakim), it is supported by the hadith of Ibn Umar in Ibn Majah (253), the hadith of Hudhayfah also in Ibn Majah (259), and the hadith of Anas in al-Bazzar (7295); but these chains are very weak.
Important point: The chain of the hadith of Anas contains Sulayman bin Ziyad bin Ubayd Allah, about whom al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mughni fi al-Du'afa'" (2585): "He is not known, and his hadith is munkar, rather false (batil)."
General principle: We say: the best and most authentic hadith on this topic is the marfu' hadith of Abu Hurayrah about the first three people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection; among them is a man who learned knowledge, taught it and recited the Qur'an, but learned knowledge so that it would be said "He is a scholar" and recited the Qur'an so that it would be said "He is a reciter"; and it was said, then he will be commanded and dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.
Reference / Source: Muslim (1905) and others narrated it, and it will come with the author at no. (369).
