Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 445

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lying is not right, neither in seriousness nor in jest, nor is it right that a man makes a promise to his son and then does not fulfil it. Truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, while lying leads to wickedness (fujur) and wickedness leads to the Fire. It is said of the truthful person: 'He spoke the truth and did right,' and it is said of the liar: 'He lied and did wrong.' A man keeps telling the truth until he is recorded with Allah as 'Siddiq' (truthful), and he keeps lying until he is recorded with Allah as 'Kadhdhab' (a great liar)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim); although most of its sentences are also narrated as mawquf (a Companion's statement), with this chain it is sahih on their condition.

Grading: Its chain is sahih, but regarding its first part, what is technically correct is that it is the saying of 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) himself (mawquf).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The majority of the students of Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i narrated it from him as mawquf, as is made clear in the narration of Imam Shu'bah in "Musnad Ahmad" (7/ 3896) and the commentary on it. "Jarir" in the chain is Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, and "Abu al-Ahwas" is 'Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Musa bin 'Uqbah corroborated Idris al-Awdi in narrating the whole of it as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)), in Ibn Majah (46).
Reference / Source: The second part of this narration, with similar meaning, was recorded by Imam Ahmad (7/ 4022, 4095, 4160) and Imam Muslim (2606) through two routes from Abu Ishaq.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in several places in his Musnad, as did Imam al-Bukhari (6094), Imam Muslim (2607), Abu Dawud (1971) and Ibn Hibban (272 - 274), through various routes from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, from 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud.
