It is narrated from Alqamah that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Discuss hadiths among yourselves, for the mention of hadith is its very life (the means of keeping it alive).

Grading: This athar is "sahih", but it is the saying of Alqamah (bin Qays al-Nakha'i) rather than of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim erred in taking it back to Ibn Mas'ud, as Imam al-Bayhaqi clarified in "al-Madkhal" (423-424). As against al-Hakim, Abu Zakariyya al-Muzakki and Abu Sa'id bin Abi Amr differed from him and made it mawquf on Alqamah (his own saying). Reference / Source: Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb narrated it in "al-'Ilm" (71), and via his route Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (41/ 184), from Abu Yahya al-Himmani (Abd al-Hamid bin Abd al-Rahman) with this same chain, and he too made it mawquf on Alqamah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Yahya al-Himmani's version was corroborated by Ahmad bin Harb (in al-Ramahurmuzi: 725) and by al-Abbas bin Muhammad al-Duri (in al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "Sharaf Ashab al-Hadith": 212, and Ibn Asakir 41/ 185); they all narrate it from Abu Yahya al-Himmani as the saying of Alqamah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan al-Thawri also supported Abu Yahya al-Himmani (see: al-Darimi 627, Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 2/ 101, and al-Khatib 1821). He narrated it with the chain al-A'mash from Ibrahim (al-Nakha'i) from Alqamah bin Qays al-Nakha'i, as the saying of Alqamah. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Isra'il Isma'il bin Khalifah differed from all of them: he narrated it via Ata' bin al-Sa'ib from Abu al-Ahwas from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud, as the saying of Ibn Mas'ud. Grading: This narration is weak because Abu Isra'il is a weak narrator; also, in Imam al-Darimi's narration al-Sa'ib (the father of Ata') is mentioned between Ata' and Abu al-Ahwas (see: Ahmad 2675, al-Darimi 643, al-Ramahurmuzi 726).
