Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 293

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not acquire knowledge in order to boast over the scholars with it, or to argue with the foolish with it, nor in order to secure a place in gatherings (to gain prominence) with it. Whoever does that, then for him is the Fire, the Fire."

Hadith Grading

Grading: The chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi (al-Misri) is not a highly precise, trustworthy narrator; in this hadith he differed from someone many degrees more trustworthy than him by narrating it with a connected chain (musnad), whereas Abd Allah bin Wahb narrated it as mursal, as the author himself mentions, making it a hadith of Ibn Jurayj from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Ibn Wahb is a thiqah hafiz, so his narration takes precedence and is preponderant.
Note / Clarification: That narration will come later with the author at no. (295).
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (254) and Ibn Hibban (77) narrated it via two routes from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: His words "tamaraw" mean: you disputed (argued) with one another.
Note / Clarification: The word "litahayyazu" is as found with the author, while with others it is "litakhayyaru", with the same meaning, i.e. so that you may choose by it (knowledge) the best places in gatherings and their front seats.
Note / Clarification: The word "fa-l-nar" means: then for him is the Fire, or he deserves the Fire.
