It is narrated from Tawus that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "And none knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly grounded in knowledge." [Surah Al Imran: 7] Then he said: "We used to memorise hadith (before), and the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was memorised (with great care), until you began narrating every kind of report (sound and weak)."
This chain is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ayyub is Ibn al-Durays, the author of the book "Fada'il al-Qur'an", and Ibn Tawus is Abd Allah (bin Tawus). Reference / Source: Imam Muslim transmitted it in the introduction of his "Sahih Muslim", chapter number (4), and Imam Ibn Majah (27) and Imam al-Nasa'i (5838) narrated it through the route of Abd al-Razzaq bin Hammam from Ma'mar bin Rashid with this same chain. Details of the narration: Imam Muslim also narrated a narration of the same meaning through the route of Mujahid bin Jabr from Abd Allah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). Note / Clarification: Regarding the words of the text "al-sa'b wa al-dhalul", al-Nawawi says in "Sharh Muslim": the terms "sa'b" and "dhalul" are originally used for camels. "Sa'b" is a difficult mount that is avoided, and "dhalul" is an easy, good mount that is loved and desired. So the meaning of the hadith is: people took every kind of path, whether praiseworthy or blameworthy.
