Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan" on account of its routes and supporting reports, but this particular chain is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement about the probity ('adalah) of the narrator Sahl bin 'Ammar, as Imam al-Hakim himself said (as in al-Dhahabi's al-Siyar 13/ 33), and Ibn Mandah declared him weak (as in Lisan al-Mizan); however, he is corroborated. Moreover, there is an "inqita'" (break) in the chain, because it is not known that al-Muttalib bin 'Abd Allah bin Hantab heard from Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7770) and "al-Adab" (193) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi also narrated it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (10/ 194) through the route of Abu al-Azhar (Ahmad bin al-Azhar), from Muhadir bin al-Muwarri', but it does not mention "al-Muttalib", and there is also weakness in its chain.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Hannad bin al-Sari narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (1262) through the route of 'Abdah bin Sulayman, from Sa'd bin Sa'id al-Ansari, without mentioning "al-Muttalib".
Reference / Source: Al-'Uqayli narrated it in "al-Du'afa'" (1875) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (5725) through the route of Wahb bin Hakim al-Azdi, from Muhammad, from Muhammad bin Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Wahb bin Hakim is "majhul" and hardly known at all.
Reference / Source: Ibn Shahin narrated it in one of his juz' (40) through the route of 'Abd Allah bin Kaysan, from Muhammad bin Wasi', from Ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator 'Abd Allah bin Kaysan is "not strong".
Reference / Source: Tammam al-Razi (837), Abu Nu'aym (al-Hilyah 2/ 356) and al-Bayhaqi (7771) narrated it through various routes from Muhammad bin Wasi'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All of these routes are either very weak or completely "talif" (worthless), and no attention can be given to them.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a supporting report (shahid) of similar meaning from the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in Imam Ahmad (7/ 3938) and al-Tirmidhi (2488); al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan" and Ibn Hibban (469) declared it "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the narrator in it who narrates from Ibn Mas'ud is "majhul". All its other supporting reports can be seen in "Musnad Ahmad", but all of them are weak.
