Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "Take to forgiveness" [Surah al-A'raf: 199]: Allah Almighty commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to accept forgiveness (what comes easily) from the character of people.
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Bukhari; he used al-Tufawi as evidence, but did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This narration is "sahih", but it is the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him), not of 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); because al-Tufawi (Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman) was contradicted by others in narrating it, as will come, and al-Tufawi was prone to errors (awham). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir" (5/ 1637) from his father (Abu Hatim al-Razi), from 'Amr bin Muhammad al-Naqid, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (1216) through the route of 'Uthman bin Hafs, from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'qub bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi contradicted 'Amr al-Naqid and 'Uthman bin Hafs in the version of Abu Dawud (4787); he narrated it with the chain al-Tufawi, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'Abd Allah (meaning Ibn al-Zubayr), and this is the "mahfuz" (correct) version. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This (the attribution to Ibn al-Zubayr) is supported by the narrations of Waki' bin al-Jarrah (al-Bukhari: 4643), Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah (al-Bukhari: 4644) and 'Abdah bin Sulayman (al-Nasa'i: 11131); all three narrated it with the chain Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr.
