Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 429

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd that Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Would that you wore clothing softer than this clothing of yours and ate food more pleasant than this food of yours, when Allah has granted you victory and widened your provision! He said: I will have you judge the matter by your own self. Then he spoke about the circumstances of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the hardship of his life, until Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have resolved that I will share in the hard life of my two companions (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)), so that I may attain the life of ease with them (in the Hereafter).
This hadith is sahih on the condition of the two Shaykhs; Mus'ab bin Sa'd is among the senior Tabi'un and used to visit the Mothers of the Believers.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: If it is established that Mus'ab bin Sa'd heard from Hafsah bint 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), this chain is "hasan"; otherwise it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The brother of Isma'il is "al-Nu'man bin Abi Khalid", as stated explicitly in the narration of Muhammad bin Bishr in some sources. Al-'Ijli declared him thiqah, and Imam Ahmad said in "Su'alat al-Marrudhi" (194) that there is no harm in him, while Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned him without any criticism or praise. The other narrators of the chain include Abu al-Muwajjih (Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari), 'Abdan ('Abd Allah bin 'Uthman al-Marwazi) and 'Abd Allah (Ibn al-Mubarak).
Reference / Source: This narration is in Ibn al-Mubarak's book "al-Zuhd", in the transmission of al-Husayn al-Marwazi, at number (574).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 227), 'Abd bin Humayd (25), Ya'qub bin Sufyan (2/ 188), al-Bayhaqi (10123) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (111) narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Bishr al-'Abdi, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Suwayd bin Nasr contradicted this in the version of Imam al-Nasa'i (11806): he narrated it with the chain Ibn al-Mubarak, from Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Mus'ab bin Sa'd, dropping the intermediary (al-Nu'man) between them.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Yazid bin Harun (in Ibn Sa'd's al-Tabaqat, Ahmad's al-Zuhd, Ibn Abi al-Dunya, al-Hilyah and Shu'ab al-Iman) and Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah (in Ibn Sa'd and the Musnad of Ishaq bin Rahawayh) both corroborated him, through the route of Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Mus'ab bin Sa'd.
Note / Clarification: In explaining 'Umar's words "la-usharikannahuma" (I will be a partner with the two of them), Yazid bin Harun added that this means the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Isma'il heard from both his brother and Mus'ab bin Sa'd, so if both chains are "mahfuz", then the mention of his brother al-Nu'man in the chain falls under "al-mazid fi muttasil al-asanid" (an addition within a connected chain).
Important point: Imam al-Daraqutni, in "al-'Ilal" 2/ 139 (162), considered the narration that mentions al-Nu'man to be more correct. And Allah knows best.
